Five days in the history of the Middle Ages, in the heart of Gubbio
The Festival del Medioevo is the main Italian event dedicated to the dissemination of medieval history. Founded in 2015, it brings about a hundred protagonists โ including medievalists, art historians, writers, and philosophers โ to Gubbio, in the heart of Umbria and the province of Perugia, every year at the end of September. The festival is directed by journalist Federico Fioravanti.
The idea is to recount the thousand years from the fall of the Western Roman Empire to the discovery of America, using language accessible to everyone. The festival intertwines several facets:
Gubbio, with its grey stone profile, hanging squares, and the Palazzo dei Consoli, is the ideal setting for a festival that speaks of the Middle Ages. The various sections animate the historic center, transforming it into a large open-air cultural laboratory capable of attracting scholars, enthusiasts, and the curious from all over Italy.
The XII edition of the Festival del Medioevo, scheduled in Gubbio from September 23 to 27, 2026, bears the title 'The Time of Francis. Homo homini lupus'. It is a journey to the dawn of the thirteenth century to celebrate Francis of Assisi eight hundred years after his death, exploring his radical choice to live according to the Gospel, fraternal love for Creation, and the complex relationship with the Church and the Franciscan Order. The novelty for 2026 is the new venue: the San Francesco Complex, in Piazza Quaranta Martiri, which strengthens the link between the edition's theme and the historical sites of the Franciscan experience.
The festival is divided into five days, from September 23 to 27, 2026, with a packed schedule of events spread across conferences, exhibitions, and experiential activities. The main confirmed sections are:
The detailed calendar with times and speakers will be published in the months preceding the event on the official website festivaldelmedioevo.it.

Most of the festival's conferences and events are free to enter. Program and details on the official website festivaldelmedioevo.it.
