The great medieval reenactment and the equestrian joust of the three districts
The Palio di Valfabbrica, also known as Festa d'Autunno – Giostra d'Italia, is the grand historical reenactment that transforms the village of Valfabbrica, in the province of Perugia, into a medieval city. For almost two weeks, the streets and squares are filled with costumed figures, while the three districts compete for the Palio in a crescendo of challenges and ceremonies inspired by the 12th-13th centuries.
The city is divided into three districts (rioni): Badia, named after the ancient Benedictine Abbey of Santa Maria Assunta and with the wolf as its emblem; Osteria, representing the area where travelers rested; and Pedicino. Each district stages, along the streets of the center, evocative reenactments with grand sets, choreography, games, and fireworks, in a competition that culminates in the joust.
The highlight is the equestrian joust, scheduled for the first Sunday of September: knights from the three districts compete in skill tests such as the ring race, the assault on the saracen, and direct combat, to win the coveted Palio. The days are also marked by medieval ceremonies — challenges proclaimed, knights invested, oaths of loyalty sworn — torch races, and popular games.
Throughout the event, the typical medieval taverns are open, where traditional dishes are served in a convivial atmosphere. The festival, established in 1974 by the will of the citizens to revive an ancient custom, is linked to the feast of the Crucifix and enjoys the support of the Umbria Region, the Municipality of Valfabbrica, the Italian Equestrian Sports Federation (FISE), and the Ministry of Culture, which recognizes it among Italy's historical reenactments.
The Palio di Valfabbrica 2026 returns from August 27 to September 6 with its grand medieval reenactment. The three districts — Badia, Osteria, and Pedicino — bring the historic center to life with parades, sets, ceremonies, and games, while the typical taverns remain open. The challenge concludes with the spectacular equestrian joust on the first Sunday of September, September 6, which awards the Palio.
The event takes place over almost two weeks in the historic center of Valfabbrica. The detailed program, with the evening schedule of parades, competitions, and shows, is published on the official website. Typical edition structure:
