Life-size dinosaurs and fossils in the heart of Gubbio, between paleontology and evolution
The exhibition EXTINCTION - Dinosaurs in Flesh and Bone is set up in the Monastery of San Benedetto, in Via del Perilasio 2, in the heart of Gubbio (Province of Perugia). The exhibition is dedicated to the great mass extinctions in Earth's history and the evolution of life, with a path that combines spectacle and scientific rigor.
The protagonists are the hyper-realistic 1:1 scale paleo-sculptures created by GeoModel, which bring back to life the dinosaurs that disappeared 66 million years ago. Alongside the models, the exhibition displays fossils and artifacts from the Gola del Bottaccione (the famous Gorge of Iridium), and the Quadrisphere by physicist Paco Lanciano, which tells the geological and paleontological history of the area.
The value of the exhibition lies precisely in its connection to the territory: the Gola del Bottaccione, on the outskirts of Gubbio, is a geological site of world importance, where the iridium anomaly was identified, leading to the theory of a meteorite impact as the origin of the dinosaurs' extinction. The exhibition, curated by paleontologists Simone Maganuco and Stefania Nosotti with the involvement of the University of Perugia, also offers educational workshops for children aged 4 and up.
In 2026, the exhibition EXTINCTION - Dinosaurs in Flesh and Bone remains open for the entire year (with an expected opening until February 2027) at the Monastery of San Benedetto in Gubbio. The exhibition path combines hyper-realistic life-size paleo-sculptures, fossils and artifacts from the Gola del Bottaccione, and multimedia installations.
Curated by paleontologists Simone Maganuco and Stefania Nosotti with the involvement of the University of Perugia, the exhibition also offers educational workshops for the little ones (from 4 years old), designed to introduce families to the paleontology and geology of the Eugubino territory.
