High-altitude trail running in Val Senales, between glaciers and the paths of Ötzi
The Schnalstal Alpine Trail is a trail running event held in the heart of Val Senales (Schnalstal), in the municipality of Senales/Schnals, in the province of Bolzano, Trentino-South Tyrol. The race headquarters are located in Unser Frau / Madonna di Senales, the start and finish point for the main races. It is here, among high-altitude pastures, alpine lakes, and glaciers, that athletes compete on one of the most spectacular and demanding courses in the Italian Alps.
The sporting program features five races, designed to accommodate both ultra-specialists and younger runners:
Val Senales is the valley of Ötzi, the Iceman discovered in 1991 on the nearby Similaun glacier. Here, the terrain becomes an integral part of the challenge: glaciers, alpine lakes, and historic trails dictate the pace, technical choices, and management of physical effort. The race traverses a high-mountain environment where altitude and weather conditions can change rapidly, as demonstrated by the inaugural 2025 edition, when a sudden weather deterioration forced changes to the routes.
The Schnalstal Alpine Trail is also distinguished by a total prize pool of 19,000 euros, distributed equally between the men's and women's categories. The event is recognized by the ITRA (International Trail Running Association), with points awarded for international rankings. The organization is managed by SALTY Trailrunning, in collaboration with Alpin Arena Senales and local tourism boards.
Established in 2025, the race has quickly become a reference point for high-altitude trail running in Trentino-South Tyrol, attracting athletes from Germany, Austria, Norway, and Italy. For the public and enthusiasts, it is also an opportunity to discover Val Senales in summer, enjoying hiking, South Tyrolean gastronomy, and the evocative glacial landscapes of the Similaun.
The second edition of the Schnalstal Alpine Trail takes place from Thursday, July 30 to Saturday, August 1, 2026, based in Unser Frau / Madonna di Senales, in the municipality of Senales/Schnals (BZ). The races are spread across Maso Corto, Alpin Arena Senales, the glacier, and high-altitude sections up to the South Tyrol-Tyrol border.
The program includes five distances: ULTRA (58 km, +3,600 m), SKY (29.5 km, +2,100 m), VERTICAL (7.6 km, +1,250 m, finishing at the Iceman Ötzi Peak platform at 3,251 meters), SPEED, and Kids Run. The Vertical opens the competitions on Thursday, July 30, while the Ultra starts on Saturday morning at 4:00 AM.
The total prize pool amounts to 19,000 euros, with equal awards for men and women. Expected athletes include Andreas Reiterer, vice-world champion among Italian trail runners, alongside specialists from Germany, Austria, and Norway.
Val Senales can be reached by car from Val Venosta, exiting the SS38 state road at Naturno/Naturns and driving up the valley to Unser Frau / Madonna di Senales. The nearest train station is in Naturno, which is connected by bus lines; the most convenient airports are Bolzano or, for international flights, Innsbruck and Verona.
Registration is done online via the RaceResult platform, linked to the official website. Bib collection and the race briefing take place in the start/finish area in Unser Frau / Madonna di Senales during the event days. For information: [email protected].
As these are high-altitude races, equipment suitable for mountain conditions is essential. Numerous accommodation options are available in the valley; it is recommended to book your stay well in advance during the race period.
