About Scavalcamontagne in Terzo

Scavalcamontagne is a traveling theater project that has been transforming Piedmont's trails and town squares into open-air stages since 2020. With backpacks on, these artist-hikers travel between villages on foot to perform every evening. The walking tour stops in Terzo, in the province of Alessandria, for a show at the Municipal Arena: an evening of musical theater and circus arts with free admission and a "pass-the-hat" collection.

The traveling theater arrives in Terzo

Since 2020, Scavalcamontagne has been taking theater out of conventional venues: the artists travel on foot between villages, backpacks on their shoulders, performing every evening in town squares, courtyards, and in front of local castles. The project's philosophy is simple and evocative: "walk in the morning, discover the small villages that host us in the afternoon, and perform in their stunning squares in the evening." Born as a "walking theater," the project combines hiking, local exploration, and live performance.

The stop in the Municipality of Terzo

The Walking Tour stops in Terzo, a small municipality in the Alessandria area of Piedmont, in the heart of the Acqui region. The show takes place at the Municipal Arena, an open-air space that welcomes the public for a summer evening of theater and music. The Terzo stop is part of the Alessandria leg of the tour, which visits dozens of towns every year across the provinces of Alessandria, Asti, and Cuneo.

Shows and styles

The company offers a repertoire that blends musical theater, opera, singer-songwriter music, and circus arts. Productions on the tour include:

  • Non ti scordar… di che? — four stage veterans evoke past glories through poetic memories, prose, classical music, and opera;
  • Il Circo del giorno dopo — surreal characters reveal how the world works;
  • Primo appuntamento — love stories told through music;
  • classics from their repertoire such as Ricette e sinfonie and Alzati e cammina.

A project supported by the region

Scavalcamontagne was created by soprano and actress Irene Geninatti Chiolero and actor and performer Danilo Ramon Giannini, and is produced by Teatro della Caduta and Torino Open Lab with the support of the Piedmont Region. Every year, the tour covers dozens of stops and hundreds of kilometers on foot, reaching even high-altitude mountain huts, with the goal of bringing culture to small towns and rural areas.

Admission and atmosphere

All tour performances are free to attend, with a "pass-the-hat" formula: a voluntary, free-will collection at the end of the evening that directly supports the artists. It is a simple, intimate way to experience open-air theater on a summer night in the village of Terzo.
