The classical music festival of the Oltregiogo, starting from the inaugural concert in Bosco Marengo
The International Musical Weeks is a classical and contemporary music festival running from late May to mid-December across the municipalities of the Province of Alessandria, in Piedmont. Organized by the Musica&Cultura Pentagramma Association, the festival offers around twenty events featuring solo piano, chamber music, and orchestral works, hosted in churches, palaces, and historic residences throughout the Oltregiogo villages. The core mission is to promote the region's artistic and landscape heritage through the power of great music.
The symbolic heart of the event is the inaugural concert, held at the Santa Croce Monumental Complex in Bosco Marengo, a Renaissance masterpiece commissioned by Pope Pius V, who was born in the town. Within the solemn setting of the Santa Croce church, the acoustics and architectural beauty create a unique atmosphere for listening. The Municipality of Bosco Marengo has hosted the festival's opening for years, highlighting the deep bond between the event and this site of great historical and artistic value.
The program alternates between piano recitals, chamber ensembles (duos, trios, quartets), and orchestral concerts, spanning from the Baroque and Classical repertoire to 20th-century masterpieces and world premieres by contemporary composers. The festival also dedicates space to young talent through piano and chamber music competitions, as well as lecture-concerts aimed at students.
The International Musical Weeks combine culture with charity: admission to concerts is generally through donations supporting the LILT โ Novi Ligure delegation (Italian League for the Fight Against Cancer), turning every evening into a gesture of collective support.
Beyond Bosco Marengo, the festival reaches numerous municipalities in the area: Gavi, Novi Ligure, Pozzolo Formigaro, Rocca Grimalda, Silvano d'Orba, Voltaggio, San Cristoforo, Francavilla Bisio, Capriata d'Orba, Lerma, Carrosio, Pasturana, and others. Each stop is an opportunity to discover a lesser-known corner of Piedmont, amidst hills, castles, and ancient churches, accompanied by live music.
The twelfth edition of the International Musical Weeks opens on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at 9:00 PM at the Santa Croce Monumental Complex in Bosco Marengo with the inaugural concert "Dante and Liszt: Between Heaven and Hell", performed by Daniele Fasani and Gianluca Faragli on two pianos, with the Accademia MusicArte Children's Choir, featuring music by Debussy, Liszt, and a world premiere by Spina. The festival continues until December 14, 2026, in the villages of the Oltregiogo, under the artistic direction of Gianluca Faragli.
The 2026 program includes around twenty events from late May to December. Key stops include:
The inaugural concert at the Santa Croce Complex in Bosco Marengo, featuring the duo piano performance by Daniele Fasani and Gianluca Faragli, the children's choir, and the world premiere of a piece by Spina. Also noteworthy are the competitions dedicated to young musicians (Oltregiogo Piano Competition, Clara Wieck Schumann Prize) and the lecture-concerts for students.
The Santa Croce Monumental Complex is located on Viale Santa Croce in Bosco Marengo (AL), about 1 km from the town center and fifteen kilometers from Alessandria. By car, it can be reached via the A26 motorway (Predosa exit) or the A21; the reference railway station is Alessandria, which is well-connected to Turin, Milan, and Genoa.
Admission to concerts is generally through donations supporting the LILT โ Novi Ligure delegation. For some events, such as the piano competition final, admission is by free donation.
