The major showcase for young Italian musicians in the heart of Tuscany
The Scandicci International Music Competition is one of the most significant events dedicated to youth music in Italy. It takes place every May in Scandicci, a city in the Metropolitan City of Florence, Tuscany, and involves thousands of young people from across the peninsula. The initiative is promoted by the Filarmonica Vincenzo Bellini of Scandicci in collaboration with the Department of Public Education of the Municipality of Scandicci and under the patronage of the Tuscany Region.
The competition is open to a wide range of school and amateur musical groups: middle schools with music programs, music high schools, comprehensive institutes, primary schools, music projects, music academies, opera and modern singing schools, and brass bands. This inclusivity makes it a massive event: recent editions have seen the participation of thousands of young instrumentalists and singers representing numerous Italian regions.
Performances are organized into several sections covering almost the entire musical spectrum: primary and secondary school orchestras and bands, choirs, solo piano, percussion, wind instruments, chamber music, and small ensembles, as well as opera and modern singing categories. Each section is evaluated by a jury of professional musicians and educators, and the best performers receive awards and recognition during the prize-giving ceremonies that conclude the competition days.
Alongside the competition, the program offers masterclasses, workshops, and concerts that allow young people to engage with established artists. Among the most anticipated events of recent editions are the inaugural event in Piazza della Resistenza, featuring large gatherings of guitarists and percussionists playing alongside professional musicians, and lessons held by well-known names in the Italian music scene. It is a precious opportunity for students, teachers, and professionals to meet.
For Scandicci and the entire Florentine area, the competition represents a major cultural showcase, capable of filling theaters, auditoriums, and squares for over a week. The event highlights the educational role of music and creates a bridge between the many Italian schools that invest in the musical training of the youngest generations.
The 15th edition of the Scandicci International Music Competition, organized by the Filarmonica Vincenzo Bellini with the support of the Municipality of Scandicci and the patronage of the Tuscany Region, proved to be a record-breaking event with approximately 6,000 young musicians from over 160 schools and 16 Italian regions.
Numerous schools achieved the 1st Absolute Prize with a perfect score of 100/100, including the IC Matteo Ripa of Eboli and the Forteguerri Music High School of Pistoia. A special recognition was awarded to the Centro Diurno 1864 of the Red Cross of Cascina for the powerful human and inclusive message of its participation.
"A Thousand Guitars & Drums in Scandicci City of Music": a grand gathering of guitarists and percussionists who played alongside professional musicians Giuseppe Scarpato (guitar), Luca Colombo (guitar), Marco Polidori (bass), Lorenzo Campani (vocals), and Ivano Zanotti (drums).
Throughout the week, competitions for the various sections took place: primary and secondary school orchestras and bands, choirs, solo piano, percussion, wind instruments, chamber music, and singing. Masterclasses included a percussion workshop led by Carmelo Gullotto and Claudio Romano; the jury president for the singing section was soprano Susanna Rigacci. The days concluded with prize-giving ceremonies for the various categories.
Scandicci is connected to Florence by tram line 1, making it easily accessible from the center of the Tuscan capital. By car, it can be reached via the Firenze-Scandicci exit on the A1 motorway.
Participation is reserved for schools, groups, and individuals as per the annual call for entries. Registrations are made online by the deadlines indicated each year (for the 2026 edition, by April 14). All information, the program, and the official regulations are published on the competition's official website.
