The historic international road running race in the heart of Arezzo
The Scalata al Castello is one of the longest-running and most prestigious road races in Tuscany. Every year, the historic center of Arezzo, the capital of the province of the same name, transforms into a race track where top international middle-distance runners compete before a large and passionate crowd. The race takes its name from the route that winds through the heart of the city, reaching the slopes of the hill dominated by the Medici Fortress, a symbol of Renaissance Arezzo.
The highlight of the event is the evening international race, held on an 830-meter city circuit repeated 12 times, for a total distance of 10 km. The start and finish are located in Piazza Guido Monaco, the city's main drawing room. The fast and technical track, entirely within the historic center, provides runners with the constant support of spectators lining the streets and rewards specialists capable of maintaining high speeds on a short, repetitive loop.
Scalata al Castello is not just for elite athletes. The day begins in the morning with the amateur race, consisting of a 10 km competitive race and a 5 km non-competitive fun run, open to FIDAL, RUNCARD, and EPS members. In the afternoon, it is time for the Esordiadi and youth events, involving children in running trials and promotional activities. The grand finale is the evening international race, the main event that attracts champions from Kenya, Ethiopia, Burundi, Morocco, and Italy.
Organized by U.P. Policiano Arezzo Atletica in collaboration with FIDAL, the Municipality and Province of Arezzo, and under the patronage of the Tuscany Region, Scalata al Castello is deeply rooted in the sporting tradition of Arezzo. Over its many editions, it has hosted top-level athletes, including Olympic and World medalists, confirming its status as one of the most anticipated stages on the national running calendar. For Arezzo, it is also a popular festival, bringing sport to the people and showcasing the city's historic center.
The 53rd Scalata al Castello confirmed its status as a classic international event in Arezzo's running scene. The elite race, which started shortly after 6:00 PM in Piazza Guido Monaco, was held on the traditional 830-meter city circuit repeated 12 times. About 30 international athletes took to the start, with a spectacular final duel between Africa and Italy. The day began in the morning with the amateur race and continued in the afternoon with the Esordiadi and youth events.
In the morning amateur race, Michele Pastorini won the men's category and Giulia Bernini the women's.
Arezzo is well-connected by the railway line on the Rome-Florence route, just a few minutes' walk from Piazza Guido Monaco. By car, the city can be reached from the Arezzo exit of the A1 motorway. During the event, the historic center is subject to traffic closures: the use of peripheral parking lots is recommended.
Registration for amateur races is done online via the dedicated portal by the date indicated by the organization. The international race is reserved for elite athletes by invitation.
Bibs can be collected the day before the race at the U.P. Policiano headquarters and on the morning of the race in Piazza Guido Monaco.
