Two days of flavour, faith, and tradition for Saint Vitus the Martyr, in the heart of Irpinia
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Santostefanese Festival, also referred to in flyers as the Festival of Santostefanese Flavours, is the mid-June highlight in Santo Stefano del Sole, a town of just over two thousand inhabitants in the province of Avellino, Campania. Located at an altitude of about 550 metres in the Sabato Valley, at the gates of the Monti Picentini Regional Park, the town is surrounded by chestnut groves, beech forests, and small hamlets, giving the event an authentic character rooted in neighborhood conviviality rather than mass tourism.
For two days, the town centre fills with food stalls, open-air dining tables, local product stands, and musical evenings in Piazza del Sole. It is a family-friendly festival where visitors from Avellino and neighboring towns mingle with locals and those who have returned home specifically for the occasion.
The festival is deeply connected to the rites in honor of Saint Vitus the Martyr, the community's co-patron since 1814, the year the Saint's relics arrived from Rome and were housed in the Mother Church. The bond is so strong that the town celebrates the Saint twice a year: in June with the liturgical feast on the 15th, which coincides with the Santostefanese Festival, and at the end of August with the major feast dedicated to the translation of the relics.
The June event is the more intimate and traditional of the two. The Saint's day includes Holy Mass in the Mother Church and, in the evening, the solemn procession of the Patron Saints through the streets of the town, accompanied by a marching band. Faith and festivities go hand in hand: once the procession ends, the crowd moves toward the food stalls as the music resumes.
The heart of the event is home-style cooking, featuring traditional Irpinian peasant recipes. Past editions have offered simple and hearty dishes, including:
Around the stalls, you can also find products that tell the story of these hills: hazelnuts, cherries, chestnuts, and Annurca apples, which are staples of the valley's agricultural economy.
The festival evenings take place in Piazza del Sole, where the stage stays active until late. The repertoire is designed to get all generations dancing: ballroom, Latin-American, and Caribbean music, with orchestras and DJs alternating over the two nights. This is not an international festival, and that is precisely the point: you dance in the square, among tables and glasses, just as people used to do.
Visitors to the festival should take a few hours to explore the village. Santo Stefano del Sole preserves a rare folk tradition, the Rosamarina, a rhythmic tambourine song linked to the Easter period, and holds Samnite and Lombard memories documented since the year 1000. Trails leading to Monte Faggeto and the Monti Picentini Regional Park start here, while in August the town returns to the spotlight with the historic Podolico Veal Festival and the SoleArte artisan exhibition.
At the moment, the Saint Vitus the Martyr Festival Committee has not yet released the dates and programme for the 2026 Santostefanese Festival, and the event does not appear in the municipal summer calendar Vivi Santo Stefano 2026, which lists other appointments for June. We therefore recommend checking for updates on the channels of the Committee and the Municipality of Santo Stefano del Sole before traveling.
As of today, the Saint Vitus the Martyr Festival Committee has not yet published the calendar for the 2026 Santostefanese Festival. The summer programme of the Municipality of Santo Stefano del Sole, Vivi Santo Stefano 2026, lists other events for June and pushes the Saint Vitus the Martyr festivities to the end of August, without explicitly mentioning the June festival.
In the absence of official confirmation, we are not reporting dates or a programme: information will be updated as soon as the Committee or the Municipality releases the official flyer. Those wishing to plan in advance can contact the Municipality at +39 0825 673053 or follow the Committee's channels.
For reference, the previous edition was held on June 14th and 15th, featuring food stalls in the town centre, evenings of dancing in Piazza del Sole, and, on the Saint's day, Mass in the Mother Church and a procession of the Patron Saints.
In the centre of Santo Stefano del Sole (AV), with the epicenter in Piazza del Sole and the area around the Mother Church, where Mass is held and the procession begins.
By car: from the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, take the Avellino Est exit, then the SS 7 Ofantina and provincial roads towards the Sabato Valley; the town is about 15 km from the provincial capital. By train: Avellino station, then Air Campania bus lines towards Santo Stefano del Sole. By plane: Naples-Capodichino airport, about an hour's drive away.
Access to the squares, religious celebrations, and shows is free. Tastings at the food stalls are paid for on-site, according to the price list displayed by the organizers.
Evenings at this altitude can be cool even in June: it is best to bring a sweatshirt. The centre is small and easily explored on foot; it is advisable to leave your car in the parking areas at the entrance to the town. For accommodation, the widest range of options is in Avellino and the towns of the Sabato Valley, including farmhouses and small B&Bs.
