About Santomenna Living Nativity

Every December, the village of Santomenna, a small town in the Alta Valle del Sele near Salerno, transforms into an open-air nativity scene. Organized by the Pro Loco Santomenna APS, the Traveling Living Nativity guides visitors through the village's narrow streets. The Nativity is not confined to a single location but unfolds across hidden corners, small squares, and ancient spots, breathing new life and voices into a community that was nearly erased by the 1980 earthquake.

A nativity scene that walks through the alleys

The Santomenna Traveling Living Nativity is a depiction of the Nativity staged every December by the Pro Loco Santomenna APS in the small town of the Alta Valle del Sele, in the province of Salerno, Campania. The concept that sets it apart is in the name: it is not a static display in one space, but a journey winding through the alleys and squares of the village, with the audience walking from one scene to the next, following the thread of the Gospel story.

Santomenna, a village telling its own story

Santomenna has just over four hundred inhabitants and sits at an altitude of about 540 meters, nestled in the hills that separate the Sella di Conza from the Marzano massif. The town's name refers to Saint Menna, its patron saint: local tradition holds that the saint built a cell at the highest point of the territory, around which a monastic settlement later developed. Over the centuries, the village has preserved its compact appearance, characterized by clustered houses, stairways, and sudden open spacesโ€”a natural stage that the living nativity uses exactly as it is, without needing any additions.

The recent history of Santomenna is marked by the Irpinia earthquake of November 23, 1980, which destroyed or rendered unusable almost all of the building stock and claimed the lives of dozens of locals. Reconstruction gave shape to a new town, while depopulation continued to erode the community. This is why an event like the living nativity is more than just a Christmas appointment: it is a way to reoccupy the village's spaces, bring people back to the streets, and entrust a collective performance with the task of preserving memory.

How the route works

The nativity is designed as a multi-stage itinerary. Along the path, scenes of the Nativity and tableaux of daily life from the past come to life, interpreted by the residents; evening lighting, lit fires, and the stone facades do the rest. As this is an outdoor event at altitude, the visit requires comfortable shoes and clothing suitable for the winter temperatures of the Salernitan hinterland.

  • Traveling performance through the alleys of the town center
  • Actors chosen from residents and Pro Loco volunteers
  • Evening setup, in the days leading up to Christmas
  • Format suitable for families and small groups
  • An opportunity to visit a village otherwise rarely frequented by tourists

The editions

The event is relatively young: the third edition took place on December 23 and 28, 2025, following a second edition also promoted by the Pro Loco with the invitation to relive the magic of the Nativity and rediscover the town's historical sites. The double appointment, with two distinct dates instead of a single evening, allows for better crowd distribution and involves more participants throughout the holidays.

Christmas in the Alta Valle del Sele

Santomenna is part of a territory where living nativity scenes are a widespread tradition: in the towns of the Alta Valle del Sele and neighboring Irpinia, between December and Epiphany, dozens of villages stage the Nativity with similar formats. Visiting the one in Santomenna means choosing the most intimate and least touristy dimension of the phenomenon, that of a small town where the event is organized by the community for the community and where the relationship between scene and spectator remains direct.

In the surroundings

Those arriving for the nativity can combine the visit with the village's heritage: the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, the Capuchin Convent founded in 1580, and Palazzo De Ruggieri with its museum and the ancient blacksmith's workshop linked to the legend of the miracle of Saint Gerard, who, according to popular belief, ordered his horse to remove its own horseshoes in front of an overly greedy farrier. A modest heritage that gives meaning to the choice of having the public walk instead of gathering them in a single square.

Santomenna Living Nativity โ€” edition 2026

As in previous seasons, the organization is entrusted to the Pro Loco Santomenna APS, which communicates dates and route details only shortly before the holidays. Those wishing to participate can follow the association's Facebook page or contact the Pro Loco directly to verify the confirmation of the event.
