The Langhe car race in the Belbo Valley, in the province of Cuneo
The Santo Stefano Belbo Rally — Gil Calleri Cup is one of the most anticipated events in the Piedmontese motorsport calendar. It takes place among the Langhe hills, in the municipality of Santo Stefano Belbo (Cuneo province, Piedmont), the birthplace of Cesare Pavese and the heart of the Moscato d'Asti production area. Organized by the Cinzano Rally team, the event sends racing cars along ridge roads that cut through vineyards, hazelnut groves, and the villages of the Belbo Valley.
The race is valid for the ACI Sport Zone 1 Rally Cup (CRZ 1), the championship that brings together crews from the North-West and awards spots for the national final. Over the years, the rally has held various roles in the calendar: sometimes as the season finale, other times as the opening race. This flexibility makes it a pivotal event for drivers and co-drivers chasing crucial points in the standings.
The name Gil Calleri Cup pays tribute to a figure beloved by the local rallying community, while the Roberto Botta memorial trophy is awarded to the overall winner. The event thus maintains a strong emotional bond with the Langhe sporting community and the recent history of rallying in the Cuneo and Asti areas.
The route consists of special stages repeated several times, including the classic San Carlo, Cossano–Rocchetta, and the stretches towards Santo Stefano and Trezzo Tinella. These are technical roads, full of curves and gradient changes, that test driving skills and reward consistency. The headquarters and the awards ceremony are held in the center of Santo Stefano Belbo, in Piazza Umberto I, where the public can follow the arrivals and rankings up close.
Beyond the competition, the rally is an opportunity to discover the Langhe of Cuneo: UNESCO-recognized vineyard landscapes, Moscato wineries, and local cuisine featuring hazelnuts, truffles, and fine wines. For motorsport enthusiasts and visitors alike, the event combines the adrenaline of the race with the charm of one of Piedmont's most celebrated regions.
The eighth edition of the Santo Stefano Belbo Rally — Gil Calleri Cup, organized by Cinzano Rally, opened the ACI Sport Zone 1 Rally Cup season. Scrutineering and the shakedown in Cossano Belbo took place on Saturday, March 21; the race followed on Sunday, March 22, with a start at 8:00 AM and the awards ceremony at 4:00 PM in Piazza Umberto I.
The program featured three repeated special stages: San Carlo (approx. 7.5 km), Cossano–Rocchetta (approx. 11 km), and Santo Stefano (approx. 12.5 km). Under the morning rain on slippery asphalt, victory went for the second consecutive year to Ivan Carmellino and Massimo Minazzi in a Škoda Fabia RS Rally2, ahead of Elwis Chentre–Max Bay and Alessandro Pettenuzzo–Daniele Araspi.
Santo Stefano Belbo can be reached by car via the A33 Asti–Cuneo motorway (Castagnito/Alba exit) or the A21 (Asti Est exit), continuing along the Belbo Valley. By train, the Santo Stefano Belbo station is served by the Alessandria–Cavallermaggiore line.
The race takes place over a weekend, with scrutineering and shakedown on Saturday and special stages on Sunday. The awards ceremony is held in Piazza Umberto I in Santo Stefano Belbo.
