The Oricola Patronal Feast

The Santa Restituta Patronal Feast is the most cherished event in the calendar of the Municipality of Oricola, a small village of just over a thousand inhabitants perched at an altitude of about 810 meters in the Piana del Cavaliere, on the extreme western border of Abruzzo, in the province of L'Aquila. Every year, on May 17th, the entire community gathers to honor its patron saint, Saint Restituta of Africa, in a celebration that has its roots in the Middle Ages and continues to define the village's identity.

Saint Restituta, patron saint of Oricola

According to tradition, Saint Restituta was a young Christian from Carthage who was martyred during the persecutions of Emperor Diocletian. Her figure has been deeply linked to Oricola since medieval times: the Church of Santa Restituta, located just outside the town center, is dedicated to her and houses a valuable cycle of frescoes dating back to the 12th-13th century. The festival begins right from this church.

The procession and solemn Mass

The central moment of the day is the solemn procession which, starting from the Church of Santa Restituta, travels through all the streets of the village before returning for the celebration of the solemn Mass. The Confraternity of Santa Restituta, guardian of a centuries-old devotion, takes part in the procession. The passage of the saint's statue through the streets of the village, decorated for the occasion, involves faithful, families, and visitors in an atmosphere of reflection and shared celebration.

The festival is not just a religious rite, but a moment of strong cohesion for the Oricola community and the entire area of the Piana del Cavaliere and the Alto Liri, of which Oricola is a reference point. Over the years, the celebration has also attracted civil and regional authorities, testifying to the deep bond between the territory and its patron saint.
