A week of faith, music, and popular tradition in the heart of the Phlegraean Fields

The Santa Maria Libera Nos a Scandalis Patronal Feast is the most anticipated event of the year in Quarto, a town in the Metropolitan City of Naples, Campania, set within the volcanic basin of the Phlegraean Fields. In the first half of September, the town pauses to honor its patron saint with a schedule that blends popular devotion, music, comedy, and gastronomy. This is the Santa Maria Grand Gala, promoted by the Municipality of Quarto in collaboration with the parish dedicated to the Madonna, involving local associations and supported by the Campania Region and the Metropolitan City of Naples.
The Marian title that gives the feast its name is rooted in centuries-old devotion: the local community invoked the Virgin as a defense against scandals, evils, and misfortunes. This unusual title remains the religious identity of the city to this day. The heart of the cult is the Mother Church of Quarto, overlooking Piazza Santa Maria, which serves as both the liturgical and civic focal point of the town. The religious anniversary falls on September 12th, but the festivities span several days, following a well-established custom that combines ritual with public celebration.
The most heartfelt moment is the procession with the statue of the Madonna. The pageant starts from Via Cicori, winds through the streets of the historic center, and concludes with the return to Piazza Santa Maria, where a solemn mass is celebrated. This is the day when popular participation reaches its peak: decorated balconies, illuminated streets, and entire families following the route. Out of respect for the rite, evening performances are suspended or reduced on the day of the procession.
From the evening onwards, Piazza Santa Maria transforms into an open-air stage. The lineup alternates between different genres and features names well-known to the Campanian public:
Admission to all events is traditionally free: it is a community festival designed to be accessible to everyone, residents and visitors alike.
In the afternoon, the Villa Comunale Giovanni Paolo II becomes a kingdom for the little ones. The program includes entertainment, creative workshops, educational games, readings and book exchanges, painting, and treasure hunts, with a clear focus on inclusion and social interaction. This is the part of the festival that best explains why the Grand Gala is considered an event for all ages.
Around the square, food stalls offer typical products from the Phlegraean territory alongside local craft stands, while the funfair completes the village-fair atmosphere. The closing is entrusted to the fireworks display, which illuminates the sky of Quarto and puts the final touch on an intense week.
Visiting Quarto during the festival is also a great excuse to discover a less-traveled corner of Campania. The town's name derives from the fourth mile of the Via Consolare Campana that connected Cuma to Capua, and the territory preserves Roman vestiges such as the mausoleum known as Fescina. From here, you can quickly reach Pozzuoli, the Solfatara, Lake Averno, Baia, and Cuma: the Santa Maria Grand Gala can thus become the perfect conclusion to a day spent among archaeology and volcanic landscapes.
As of the writing of this guide, the Municipality of Quarto and the Santa Maria Libera Nos a Scandalis Parish have not yet released the calendar for the 2026 patronal feast. Therefore, there are no confirmed dates or a published lineup: the information provided below is based on the recurring structure of the event in previous years and should be considered indicative.
The festival is historically linked to the September 12th anniversary and spans several consecutive days. The elements that repeat from edition to edition are the solemn procession with the statue of the Madonna through the historic center and the return to Piazza Santa Maria, the free evening shows in the square featuring Neapolitan music, cabaret, and cover bands, the workshops and games for children at the Villa Comunale Giovanni Paolo II, the food stalls with Phlegraean products, local crafts, the funfair, and the final fireworks display.
The detailed program, including times and guest names, is published every year on the website of the Municipality of Quarto and on the parish's social media channels, usually in the two weeks preceding the start of the festivities. This page will be updated as soon as the official 2026 dates are announced.
Quarto is located a few kilometers from Pozzuoli, in the Phlegraean Fields area. By train: EAV Circumflegrea line from Naples Montesanto, get off at Quarto Centro or Quarto Officina, then a short walk to Piazza Santa Maria. By car: from the Naples Tangenziale, follow signs for Pozzuoli and Quarto; during the festival, the center is partially closed to traffic, so it is advisable to leave the car in peripheral areas and continue on foot. By plane: Naples Capodichino Airport, about twenty kilometers away.
Performances in Piazza Santa Maria and activities at the Villa Comunale are traditionally free of charge. Only food at the stalls and funfair attractions require payment.
The evening of the final concert and the fireworks display are the most crowded: it is best to arrive an hour early to find a spot in the square. September 12th, the day of the procession, is the right date for those seeking the religious and traditional dimension of the feast. For accommodation, the widest range of options is in Pozzuoli and on the Phlegraean coast, just a few minutes away by car.
