About Santa Maria dell'Orazione

In Pontelatone, the heart of summer belongs to the Virgin Mary: the Santa Maria dell'Orazione Patronal Feast brings together popular devotion and village joy for over two weeks. The novena, the solemn Mass, and the August 22nd procession mark the most intense days, while Piazza Cutillo becomes the stage for free evening concerts, such as the one by I Nomadi in 2025. This event draws families, emigrants returning for the holidays, and visitors from neighboring towns to this village in the Monte Maggiore area, in the province of Caserta.

A festival that tells the story of Pontelatone's identity

The Santa Maria dell'Orazione Patronal Feast is the most cherished event of the year for the Municipality of Pontelatone, a village of just over 1,500 inhabitants nestled at 128 meters above sea level on the slopes of the Monte Maggiore massif, in the province of Caserta, Campania. Here, Marian devotion is no mere formality: the Madonna dell'Orazione is the patron saint of the community, and her feast day, set for August 22nd, brings families, emigrants returning for the summer, and visitors from neighboring towns—from Formicola to Caiazzo and even Capua—back to the village.

August 22nd, the highlight

The religious heart of the festival is August 22nd, preceded by an evening novena with the recitation of the Rosary and moments of catechesis in the parish church. The patronal day begins with morning Mass, continues in the late afternoon with the procession of the Virgin's statue through the streets of the historic center—accompanied by the parish priest, confraternities, parish collaborators, civil and military authorities, and the faithful—and concludes in the evening with a solemn Eucharistic concelebration, often presided over by the bishop. In 2025, the main celebration was led by Monsignor Giacomo Cirulli during the Jubilee year.

The Church of Santa Maria dell'Orazione, returned to the faithful

The origins of the church that gives the festival its name date back to the period between 979 and 1053, during the final years of Lombard rule in Southern Italy. The building was reconsecrated on August 22, 1892, by the Bishop of Caiazzo, Monsignor Raffaele Danise: it is from that date that the community has commemorated the patron saint at the end of August. Damaged by the Matese earthquake on December 29, 2013, which caused cracks in the central arch above the high altar, the church remained closed from the end of 2021 for a four-year restoration funded by the Italian Episcopal Conference; it reopened for worship in April 2025, restoring the festival to its natural home.

Band, music, and evenings in Piazza Cutillo

Alongside the liturgical dimension is the secular one, which in Pontelatone is primarily entrusted to music. During the festival days, the Città di Casagiove Musical Band parades through the village streets with a repertoire of sacred and popular songs, following a band tradition that has never been interrupted in the Caserta area. In the evening, the focus shifts to Piazza Cutillo, where the stage for free concerts is set up: in 2025, the square was packed for I Nomadi, with spectators arriving even from outside the region. The festivities usually span over two weeks, between mid and late August.

The village and its territory

Pontelatone is more than just the municipal seat: the territory includes the hamlets of Treglia, known for its archaeological excavations, Savignano-Casalicchio, Funari, and Barignano, spread among olive groves and vineyards. It is one of the historic homes of the Casavecchia and Pallagrello grape varieties, the so-called "Bourbon royal vines," which are also celebrated every summer by a dedicated wine festival. Those arriving for the patronal feast will find a village worth stopping for even during the day, with its medieval views, panoramas of the Volturno valley, and hearty country cuisine.

How to experience the festival

The Santa Maria dell'Orazione Feast remains a village festival, free and accessible to everyone: religious celebrations and concerts in the square are open to all, with no tickets or reservations required. The atmosphere is typical of Southern patronal feasts, with lights illuminating the streets of the center, groups of families reuniting after months, and children enlivening the square until late at night. For those visiting the Caserta area in August, it is an authentic opportunity to see up close how inland Campania still lives the relationship between faith, community, and territory today.

Information and updates

The detailed program is usually published by the Santa Maria dell'Orazione Parish and distributed through posters displayed in the village, the parish Facebook page, and the local Caserta press, usually in the weeks immediately preceding the event. It is therefore advisable to check dates and times close to Ferragosto (mid-August), especially for the procession and any evening concert in Piazza Cutillo.

Santa Maria dell'Orazione — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Santa Maria dell'Orazione Patronal Feast has not yet been officially announced. As it is the patronal feast of Pontelatone, linked to the August 22nd anniversary, the event is expected again this year in the heart of summer, with a novena, solemn Mass, procession through the streets of the center, and musical evenings in Piazza Cutillo. The detailed calendar is usually released by the parish a few weeks beforehand.

2026 Edition: what we know so far

At the time of checking, no official program has been published for the 2026 edition of the Santa Maria dell'Orazione Patronal Feast in Pontelatone, in the province of Caserta. Neither the Municipality's website nor the parish channels have released dates, times, or names of musical guests.

The liturgical anniversary of the patron saint traditionally falls on August 22nd, and the main moments have always been concentrated around that date: the evening novena in the parish church, the morning Mass, the procession with the statue of the Virgin in the late afternoon, and the solemn concelebration in the evening. In recent years, these rites have been accompanied by secular events and free concerts in Piazza Cutillo.

To find out the final program, it is advisable to follow the Santa Maria dell'Orazione Parish Facebook page, the posters displayed in the village, and the local Caserta press, which usually announce the calendar in the weeks leading up to Ferragosto.

Prices Santa Maria dell'Orazione 2026

Practical information — Santa Maria dell'Orazione

Getting there

By car: A1 Milan-Naples motorway, exit at Capua, then follow provincial roads towards Formicola and Pontelatone (about 20 km from the exit). From Caserta, you can reach the village in just under 40 minutes via Bellona and Formicola. The most convenient train stations are Capua and Caserta on the regional network; from there, you must continue by car or via suburban bus connections, which are infrequent on public holidays.

Parking

The historic center is small, and on festival evenings, traffic may be restricted around Piazza Cutillo: it is best to leave your car along the roads leading into the village and continue on foot.

Costs

Free admission to all religious celebrations and performances in the square.

Tips

August evenings in the hills can be cool: a light sweater is useful. Modest attire is appropriate for the procession. In the surrounding area, it is worth combining the festival with a visit to the Treglia excavations and a tasting of Casavecchia and Pallagrello wines, produced right on these hills.
