About Santa Gemma

Every May, the Santa Gemma Festival unites San Sebastiano dei Marsi, a hamlet of Bisegna (AQ), and the nearby town of Goriano Sicoli in an ancient rite of faith and community. A young shepherdess in traditional attire leads the procession, while local women bake and distribute blessed bread from house to house, evoking the saint's charity. Three days of Abruzzo folk traditions in the Marsica mountains, celebrating a bond that has endured for six centuries.

The Santa Gemma Festival

The Santa Gemma Festival is one of the most evocative religious and folk traditions in inland Abruzzo. Celebrated every May, it involves two communities linked for centuries: San Sebastiano dei Marsi, a hamlet of the municipality of Bisegna in the province of L'Aquila, and the nearby Goriano Sicoli. According to tradition, Santa Gemma, a humble shepherdess, was born in San Sebastiano dei Marsi and later lived as a hermit in Goriano Sicoli, where she is venerated as the patron saint.

The Shepherdess Rite

The heart of the festival is the procession that departs from San Sebastiano dei Marsi: a local young woman, dressed in traditional costume—a wide red wool skirt and a blue shawl—personifies the saint and leads the parade toward Goriano Sicoli. The rite commemorates a local legend in which the community of Goriano Sicoli protected young Gemma from an unwanted marriage, sparking a lasting bond of hospitality and gratitude.

The Bread of Santa Gemma

A defining element of the festival is the bread of Santa Gemma. In the days leading up to the celebration, the women of the village gather for collective vigils to knead and bake loaves, each marked with the letters "SG". The bread is blessed and then distributed house-to-house by girls in traditional costume who carry it in baskets on their heads, along with flowers, as a symbol of sharing and charity. The distribution is accompanied by tastings of the typical ciambellone cake and local wine.

Three Days of Tradition

  • Day One: The procession leaves in the morning from San Sebastiano dei Marsi and reaches Goriano Sicoli; the bread distribution takes place in the afternoon.
  • Day Two: Religious celebrations and the procession with the saint's statue through the village streets.
  • Day Three: The cycle concludes with the shepherdess returning to San Sebastiano dei Marsi in civilian clothes.

A Heritage of the Marsica

The Santa Gemma Festival is a rare example of a shared tradition between two municipalities, weaving together religious devotion, rural memory, and mountain identity. Nestled in the landscapes of the Marsica region and just a stone's throw from the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, the festival attracts residents, returning emigrants, and visitors every year, keeping centuries-old customs alive in the heart of Abruzzo.

Santa Gemma — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Santa Gemma Festival took place from May 11 to 13, in a particularly solemn year: the celebrations were part of the 6th centenary linked to the saint (1426-2026), patron saint of Goriano Sicoli and venerated in San Sebastiano dei Marsi, a hamlet of Bisegna.

The 2026 edition of the Santa Gemma Festival was held from May 11 to 13 between San Sebastiano dei Marsi (Bisegna) and Goriano Sicoli. The year held special significance for the 6th centenary of the saint (1426-2026), featuring dedicated religious celebrations and the blessing, in the previous April, of a new devotional statue at the site of the "Ginocchio di Santa Gemma".

The program followed tradition: the shepherdess procession from San Sebastiano dei Marsi to Goriano Sicoli, the afternoon distribution of blessed bread—with loaves marked with the letters "SG" carried in baskets by young women in costume—and religious services with the statue procession through the village streets.
