A celebration of Marsican cuisine in the village of Sperone

The Wild Boar Festival is one of the summer culinary highlights in the municipality of Gioia dei Marsi, in the province of L'Aquila, in the Abruzzo region. The event takes place in the village of Sperone, one of the town's hamlets overlooking the Fucino Plain, and is part of the vast summer calendar that the municipal administration dedicates each year to culture, music, nature, and folk traditions.
Like many festivals in the Marsica area, the event was born as a moment for the community to gather: local families, associations, and visitors meet on summer evenings around outdoor tables to share the genuine flavors of the Apennine mountains.
At the heart of the festival is wild boar, the game meat that symbolizes the cuisine of the Abruzzo hinterland and the wooded territories surrounding the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. The meat is prepared according to traditional local recipes: from rich, savory sauces for homemade pasta to slow-cooked stews seasoned with mountain herbs and local wine.
Alongside the main dish, the evening features other typical products from the Gioia area, from the famous PGI Fucino potato to local cheeses and cured meats from the Marsica region, all paired with Abruzzo wines.
The village of Sperone is the most recent hamlet of Gioia dei Marsi: the inhabitants of the ancient mountain village, dominated by a picturesque medieval tower at over 1,200 meters above sea level, moved to the new village on the plain between the 1960s and 1970s. The municipality of Gioia dei Marsi, located at 735 meters altitude on the edge of the Fucino, serves as one of the gateways to the Marsica region towards the National Park, a territory of great naturalistic and gastronomic value.
The Wild Boar Festival thus fits into a context that combines culinary tradition with landscape discovery: a simple and convivial evening that tells the story of the identity of a small Abruzzo town and its people.
The festival is typically held in the first half of August, in the evening, when the cool mountain air makes dining outdoors pleasant. It is one of the events that, along with other local festivals dedicated to traditional dishes, marks the town's summer and attracts visitors from neighboring towns in the Marsica region.
The official calendar for the 2026 summer in Gioia dei Marsi has not yet been released. The Wild Boar Festival, which in previous years has taken place in the village of Sperone in the evening, is expected to be part of the municipality's rich summer program again this year. To find out the date, time, and program, we recommend following updates from the municipal administration and the local Marsica press.
Gioia dei Marsi can be reached by car from the Pescina exit of the A25 Rome-Pescara motorway, then following signs for the town and the hamlet of Sperone. The nearest railway station is Pescina, on the Rome-Avezzano-Pescara line.
The festival takes place in the evening, generally in the first half of August, as part of the municipal summer program.
For updated dates and details, we recommend checking the official channels of the Municipality of Gioia dei Marsi (tel. +39 0863 88168) and the local Marsica press.
