Lasagna with fried meatballs, the heart of Marsican tradition
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Sagna Gioiese Festival is one of the most beloved gastronomic events of the summer in Gioia dei Marsi, a small town in the Marsica region of the province of L'Aquila, in the heart of Abruzzo. The event is entirely dedicated to sagna, the symbol of local cuisine: a lasagna prepared with a homemade pasta shape similar to pappardelle, dressed with small, hand-made meatballs that are fried and then added to the sauce. It is a simple and generous recipe, passed down from generation to generation, that tells the story of the rural soul of this mountain corner.
What makes Sagna Gioiese special is the craftsmanship behind it. The pasta is hand-rolled by volunteers, while the tiny, crispy meatballs are fried before being immersed in tomato sauce. It is a long, collective process that requires the commitment of many people, which the Pro Loco of Gioia dei Marsi carries forward with the aim of keeping this culinary tradition alive. The festival, organized on a non-profit basis, thus becomes a way to keep the town united around a dish that represents its identity.
The Sagna Gioiese Festival is part of the town's rich summer calendar, which offers dozens of events each year including sports, culture, music, and tradition. The festival evening combines gastronomic tastings with live musical entertainment: in recent editions, folk orchestras and singers have enlivened the party, transforming the streets and squares of the center into a place of meeting and joy until late at night.
Experiencing the festival is also an opportunity to get to know Gioia dei Marsi and the surrounding area. The town is located in eastern Marsica, in Abruzzo, on the edge of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, in a setting of mountains, forests, and ancient villages. Those arriving for the festival can combine the tasting with a walk in nature or a visit to nearby towns, discovering an area that focuses decisively on culture and traditions as a driver for revitalization.
For the 2026 edition of the Sagna Gioiese Festival, no official dates or program have been released yet. The festival, dedicated to the traditional sagna with meatballs from Gioia dei Marsi, is usually organized by the Pro Loco in August as part of the town's summer calendar. We recommend following the official channels of the Municipality and the Pro Loco to find out the date, times, and musical appointments as soon as they are announced.
Gioia dei Marsi can be reached by car from the A25 motorway (take the Pescina or Cocullo exits, then follow provincial roads towards eastern Marsica). The most convenient train station is Avezzano, on the Rome-Pescara line, from where you can continue by car or local connections.
Access to the festival is free. Portions of sagna and other dishes can be purchased on-site at the stands managed by the Pro Loco at popular prices.
August evenings in the mountains can be cool: a warmer layer of clothing is recommended. For updated information on dates and the program, it is useful to check the channels of the Municipality and the Pro Loco of Gioia dei Marsi.
