In the summer calendar of Gioia dei Marsi, a small town in the Marsica area of the L'Aquila province (Abruzzo), the Gioia dei Marsi Fried Dough Festival holds a special place. It is not a large-scale tourist event, but a celebration deeply rooted in the community: it is organized by the town's Senior Center, which renews the tradition every year to pass on an ancient recipe and share it for free with residents and visitors alike.
The absolute star of the evening is the fritto gioiese, a pastry made from a leavened dough using simple, genuine ingredients: flour, eggs, potatoes, yeast, and, most importantly, water infused with orange zest and bay leaves. After rising, the dough is shaped, plunged into boiling oil, and finally coated in a mixture of sugar and cinnamon. The result is a soft, light, and fragrant pastry that captures the flavors and aromas of the local farming tradition.
The Gioia dei Marsi Fried Dough Festival is much more than a tasting event. The expert hands of the Senior Center volunteers prepare the dough following techniques and measurements handed down over time, and distribution is free of charge, as a sign of sharing and community spirit. It is the perfect occasion to gather in the historic center, amidst conversation, music, and the unmistakable scent of freshly fried dough.
The festival is part of the rich summer program in Gioia dei Marsi, which offers dozens of events throughout July, August, and September, ranging from concerts and gastronomic festivals to sports and cultural activities. The Fried Dough Festival thus shares the stage with other popular local events, such as the Sagna Gioiese Festival and the Piliero Festival, creating a mosaic of appointments that showcase the food and wine identity of the Marsica region.
Gioia dei Marsi is located in the eastern part of the Fucino plain, at the foot of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, in a mountainous territory that combines pristine nature with centuries-old traditions. Reaching the town means immersing yourself in one of the most authentic corners of inland Abruzzo, where summer festivals remain a fundamental moment of community life.
At the moment, the dates for the 2026 edition of the Gioia dei Marsi Fried Dough Festival have not yet been announced. As per tradition, the event is expected to take place in August, as part of the summer program of Gioia dei Marsi, with the Senior Center preparing the characteristic fried pastry flavored with orange and cinnamon. By car: Gioia dei Marsi can be reached via the A25 Rome-Pescara motorway, taking the Pescina exit and continuing towards the Vallelonga and eastern Marsica. The reference railway station is Pescina, on the Rome-Pescara line.
Tasting the fried dough offered by the Senior Center is free of charge.
