The traditional Santa Croce feast in the Cotti district of Sant'Eusanio del Sangro
The Santa Croce Festival takes place in the Cotti district, one of the rural hamlets of Sant'Eusanio del Sangro in the province of Chieti, in the heart of Abruzzo. Nestled in the hills of the Val di Sangro, the district preserves the slow, genuine rhythm of country villages, where religious festivals remain a vital moment of connection for families and generations.
The event is tied to the traditional Feast of the Invention of the Holy Cross, which the popular calendar marks around May 3rd. On this date, the community of Cotti renews an ancient rite of prayer, music, and collective participation.
The highlight of the festivities is the procession: a solemn parade that winds through the main street of the district, following the traditional route between houses and fields. The faithful are accompanied by the music of a brass band, which has brought a festive and engaging atmosphere to the celebration over the years. The procession concludes at the small country church, the focal point of local devotion.
Alongside the religious rites, the social dimension of the festival unfolds, with the community gathering near the local club and common areas to share the day with the hospitality typical of Abruzzo villages.
The municipality of Sant'Eusanio del Sangro, with its 2,200 inhabitants perched on a hill in the Val di Sangro, is known for its earth-architecture and a network of twelve districts—including Cotti, Brecciaio, Candeloro, and Castellata—each with its own traditions. The town's patron saint is San Filippo Neri, celebrated on May 26th, but it is the dense calendar of district festivals that marks the devotional life of the town throughout the warmer months.
The Santa Croce Festival in Cotti represents one of these small collective liturgies: an event minor in scale but precious for those seeking the authentic Abruzzo, that of village fairs and country feasts that stand the test of time.
The 2026 Santa Croce Festival in the Cotti district of Sant'Eusanio del Sangro (CH) was confirmed by official municipal documents: an ordinance from April 29, 2026, established a temporary ban on traffic and parking in the Cotti area to allow the festival to take place, following the customary early May schedule.
As per tradition, the heart of the day was the procession along the district road, accompanied by the band, concluding at the small country church. The detailed program of the edition was not published online: it remained, as every year, a local and community-focused district festival.
