A fair with deep roots

The Santa Anatolia Fair is one of the most iconic events in the town of Gerano, a small village in the Aniene Valley perched at an altitude of 502 meters within the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in the Lazio region. Its origins trace back to the nundinae, the periodic markets of the Roman era, which later intertwined with the cult of the young martyr Anatolia, the town's patron saint. For generations, the fair was primarily a major livestock and goods market: farmers, shepherds, and merchants would ascend to the meadow in front of the Sanctuary to buy, sell, and renew agreements. While its commercial function has evolved over time, the date has remained constant: July 9th and 10th, year after year.

The Meadow of Santa Anatolia

The heart of the event is the market area of the Prato (Meadow), the large open space facing the Sanctuary dedicated to the saint, just outside the historic center. For two days, the space fills with stalls, tents, lights, and rides: this is where the entire fair is concentrated, while the medieval village provides a stunning backdrop with its alleys, stairways, and stone arches. • Music and folk dances: spaces dedicated to folklore, with live saltarello and tarantella performances that keep the crowd dancing until late at night.

There is no shortage of rides and games for children, making the fair a perfect family outing. In town, those with extra time can visit the unique Museum of Antique Tin Boxes, one of the curiosities that has made Gerano famous far beyond its municipal borders.

The religious aspect

The devotional dimension remains the cornerstone of the event. On the afternoon of July 9th, the procession departs from the historic center and descends toward the Sanctuary, where the solemn mass at 8:00 PM is celebrated. Immediately afterward, the secular festivities resume and continue late into the night; on the morning of July 10th, the fair reopens early and concludes around lunchtime.

A bridge between cultures

Santa Anatolia is not just the patron saint of Gerano: she is also venerated by the Rom and Sinti communities, who have traveled to the town for the occasion for centuries. This is one of the fair's most recognizable features, turning it into a meeting place for the local population and families of nomadic tradition, characterized by the exchange of goods, music, and shared devotion. The Municipality of Gerano and the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital have repeatedly highlighted its value as intangible heritage to be preserved.
