Sant'Orsio Feast and Soup Festival

One of the most unique patronal feasts in the Tuscia region

In the heart of winter, when the medieval village of Vejano gathers around its churches, a tradition blending faith, memory, and community spirit is renewed on January 28th and 29th: the Feast of Sant'Orsio, the town's patron saint, accompanied by the famous Soup Festival. This fixed-date event has been rooted in the community calendar for centuries, drawing both locals and visitors from neighboring towns in the province of Viterbo every year.

The legend of Sant'Orsio

The figure of Sant'Orsio, venerated as a pilgrim, is shrouded in a fascinating legend. According to tradition, Orsio was a knight in the service of Charlemagne who, struck by a curse, unintentionally committed a triple murder. To atone for his sins, he spent the rest of his life as a penitent pilgrim, seeking redemption through deprivation, hunger, and thirst. His cult was reportedly introduced to Vejano by the Orsini family when they took control of the territory, and since then, the saint has become the protector of the local farming community.

The Soup Festival: bread and wine on the church steps

The most anticipated moment of the festival is the distribution of the soup, which takes place on the evening of January 28th. At the end of the holy mass, on the steps of the Madonna del Suffragio church, the parish priest blesses the traditional bread and wine soup, which is then offered to all those present. This gesture pays homage to the thirst and suffering endured by the saint during his years of atonement, but it also has roots in medieval peasant culture, when bread and wine were the staples of daily survival: soaking bread in wine and sharing it is a sign of gratitude and devotion.

The traditional program

The festival unfolds over two days with a well-established rhythm:

• January 28th — in the afternoon, the display of the saint's relic and the celebration of holy mass; followed by the blessing and distribution of the bread and wine soup on the steps of the Madonna del Suffragio church.
• January 29th — the patron saint's day: solemn masses, a procession through the village streets carrying the relic of Sant'Orsio, and a closing fireworks display.

Vejano, a village in the Tuscia region

Vejano is a small town in the Viterbo Tuscia area, in northern Lazio, nestled on a tuff spur between woods and ravines, not far from Lake Bracciano. The village preserves the Orsini castle, medieval alleys, and a strong rural identity: the patronal feast is its most authentic expression, capable of recounting centuries of local history in just a few hours. The bond with the Orsini family, who deeply influenced the town's history, resurfaces precisely in the cult of Sant'Orsio.

A living tradition

Supported by the Municipality of Vejano, the parish, and local associations, the festival is a free event open to everyone. Those visiting Vejano at the end of January will find a cozy and genuine atmosphere, far from the major tourist circuits: the steaming soup distributed in the winter cold, the candlelight procession, and the fireworks over the village remain among the most evocative experiences the province of Viterbo has to offer this season.
