About Sant'Oronzo Surbo

Every September, Surbo, a small town just outside Lecce, gathers around its patron saint, Sant'Oronzo, for a celebration that weaves together deep devotion and popular joy. Processions through the historic center, solemn masses, artistic light displays, brass band concerts, and lively public performances mark these days of great community participation. A tradition rooted in the Salento region since the 17th century, now organized by the Sant'Oronzo Surbo Committee.

The Patronal Feast of Surbo

The Sant'Oronzo Patronal Feast is the most anticipated event of the year for Surbo, a town in the province of Lecce located just a few kilometers from the Salento capital in Puglia. Every September, the town transforms: the streets of the historic center are adorned with artistic light displays, families return from the countryside and their workplaces, and the entire community gathers around the figure of its protector saint. It is a festival that unites the religious dimension with the secular, following the classic model of the great patronal feasts of Salento.

Sant'Oronzo, Protector of Surbo

The cult of Sant'Oronzo in Surbo has roots dating back to the early 17th century: parish registers document the baptism of the first child named Oronzo as early as 1656. Devotion grew rapidly, and after the visit of Bishop Luigi Pappacoda in 1660, the construction of a chapel dedicated to the saint began. In 1731, Sant'Oronzo was officially proclaimed the protector and patron of the town. For centuries, the people of Surbo have invoked him as a defender against lightning, earthquakes, storms, and the plague, renewing his memory every year with the most important festival on the local calendar.

Between the Sacred and the Profane

The religious heart of the festivities is the solemn procession of the statue of Sant'Oronzo, carried on shoulders through the streets of the center amidst the participation of the faithful, accompanied by Eucharistic celebrations in the mother church. Alongside the sacred rites, the secular program unfolds with traditional brass band concerts in the bandstand, musical shows in the square, market stalls, and the colors of the illuminations that light up the September evenings. There is no shortage of fireworks to close the days of celebration in style.

A Community and Its Identity

The festival is organized by the Sant'Oronzo Surbo Committee, which raises funds and coordinates the program each year in collaboration with the parish and the Municipality of Surbo. Surbo is also part of the Association of Oronzian Cities, the network that brings together Salento municipalities linked by the cult of Sant'Oronzo, including Lecce and Ugento: a bond that strengthens the sense of belonging and enhances a tradition shared by the entire territory.

Experiencing Salento in September

Participating in the patronal feast of Surbo means discovering the authentic face of Salento outside the beach season: the conviviality of the squares, the scent of traditional street food, the sound of the bands, and the intimate atmosphere of the procession. An ideal opportunity for those who want to get to know the popular and religious roots of this land just a stone's throw from Lecce.
