A neighborhood festival in the heart of Centocelle

The Sant'Ireneo Patronal Feast is one of the events that best captures the soul of Centocelle, a working-class neighborhood in the eastern part of Rome, in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in the Lazio region. Every year, during the second week of June, the community surrounding the Via dei Castani parish gathers to celebrate its patron saint with a series of days blending religious observance, neighborhood social life, and activities for the youth.

In 2026, the festival takes place from June 6 to 14. As announced by the parish, these are "days rich in prayer, meetings, and moments of fellowship": a modest formula that well describes the spirit of the event, far from the large tourist festivals of the historic center and much closer to the daily life of those who live in the neighborhood.

Sant'Ireneo, a prominent patron saint

Irenaeus of Lyons, a 2nd-century bishop and theologian, is a leading figure of early Christianity: in 2022, he was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church. In Rome, the church in Centocelle is dedicated to him, established as a parish in 1954 by decree of Cardinal Clemente Micara and elevated to a titular church in 2015. The building, designed by architect Giorgio Guidi, features a single nave; to the right of the entrance is an octagonal baptismal font, while above the neo-Gothic wooden altar—a gift from the Archbishop of Lyons, the city of Saint Irenaeus—is a 1955 painting by Mario Barberis depicting the saint and moments from his life. Since 2011, the curved apse has housed a cycle of icons.

The 'Don Nicola' tournament, the sporting heart of the festival

Alongside the celebrations, the festival's popular engine is the 'Don Nicola' 5-a-side football tournament, which in 2026 reaches its fifteenth edition and is held from June 3 to 12, preceding and accompanying the patronal days. The tournament involves neighborhood teams and local youth groups, and for many families in Centocelle, it represents the most anticipated event: evenings on the parish field become a meeting place where different generations come together.

A few steps away lies the Centocelle Archaeological Park, one of the largest green areas in the city, while the old Centocelle airport recalls the Italian aeronautical history of the early 20th century.

Like almost all Roman neighborhood patronal feasts, access to the events is free and open to all. No booking is required: simply show up on Via dei Castani during the festival days.
