About Vogalonga Tiberina

The Vogalonga Tiberina is the grand non-competitive amateur regatta on the Tiber: canoes, rowing boats, dragon boats, and kayaks travel down Rome's river from the Parco Tiberis at Ponte Marconi to the ancient port of Ostia. Established in 1977 and revived after twenty-seven years, the event celebrates the bond between the city and its river as part of Tevere Day, in a day of sport, nature, and community participation open to everyone.

The grand amateur regatta of the Tiber

The Vogalonga Tiberina is a non-competitive amateur regatta that brings dozens of boats onto the Tiber, the river that flows through Rome, every year. Canoes, rowing boats, dragon boats, and kayaks parade along the waterway in a long, colorful procession, with no stopwatches or rankings: the only goal is to row together, rediscover the river, and celebrate its connection to the city. The event takes place in the Capital, in the Lazio region, and is one of the most evocative appointments on the Roman river calendar.

From Parco Tiberis to Ostia Antica

The route, approximately 32 kilometers long, starts from the new Parco d'Affaccio Tiberis, near Ponte Marconi in the San Paolo district, and descends to the Canados Shipyard in Ostia Antica, at the Idroscalo. The boats leave the city center and, following the river's bends, reach the ancient port of Rome at the gateway to the sea. Halfway through the journey, near the Grande Raccordo Anulare, a floating platform allows for a refreshment stop before the final leg of the descent toward the coast.

A history reborn after twenty-seven years

The Vogalonga Tiberina is not new: founded in 1977 and organized until 1997 with the contribution of the Italian Navy, it had been interrupted for twenty-seven years due to the difficulties in navigating the Tiber. Its return marks the desire to bring Rome closer to its river and make it livable and accessible once again, from the center to the coast, following the example of major European capitals crossed by a waterway.

In the heart of Tevere Day

The regatta is one of the flagship events of Tevere Day, the great festival of Rome's river that brings the over eighty kilometers of the Tiber to life for ten days, from Nazzano Farfa to Ostia and Fiumicino, with tours, meetings, culture, sports, and family activities. Surrounding the Vogalonga are side initiatives such as the Rome–Ostia Cycling Tour along the Sentiero Pasolini and a cruise on the Tiber for companions, with a common arrival at the grand final buffet.

A festival open to everyone

The Vogalonga Tiberina is designed as a moment of participation rather than competition: rowing clubs, associations, and individual enthusiasts can take part with any rowing or paddling craft. Music, celebrity godmothers, and ambassadors accompany the start and finish, transforming the day into a popular festival that unites sport, nature, and a love for the Tiber and its thousand-year history.
