The patronal feast of Francavilla di Sicilia, blending faith, historical re-enactment, and folk tradition in the Alcantara Valley

Every year, on the last Sunday of August, the village of Francavilla di Sicilia—home to about four thousand residents nestled on the left bank of the Alcantara River in the province of Messina—gathers around its patron saint, Sant'Euplio. It is one of the most heartfelt events in the Alcantara Valley, a land of natural pools and scenic trails overlooking Mount Etna, rooted in an ancient cult believed to have been introduced to the area by Italo-Greek Basilian monks.
Sant'Euplio was born in Catania in the 3rd century. A Christian deacon and martyr, he was sentenced to death in 304 AD during the persecutions of Diocletian. Local tradition holds that the Saint was arrested right here in Francavilla; it is no coincidence that a local district still bears his name. In Francavilla, he is venerated as the city's protector alongside Saint Barbara, and he remains the central figure of the village's entire devotional summer.
The spiritual core of the festival is the procession of the Saint's statue, which winds through the village sites linked to the cult of Sant'Euplio, including the historic San Paolo district. In the days leading up to the feast, pilgrims arrive from the Alcantara Valley and neighboring areas. The main day begins with cannon fire and church bells, followed by solemn masses and the gathering of the Neighborhood Banners and the Confraternity, culminating in the Eucharistic Celebration at the Church of the SS. Annunziata and the procession. The parade is characterized by the statue, the relic, a miniature effigy, and the "Euplini," children dressed as the Saint.
Alongside the liturgical program, the festival features an itinerant historical theatrical re-enactment that tells the life of the deacon Euplio in several scenes: from his preaching of the Gospel in Francavilla, performed on a decorated float with period costumes, to his arrest, trial in Catania, and death sentence, staged in Piazza D'Aquino. The town's districts then bring the village to life with tastings of local specialties, folk shows, concerts, and entertainment for all ages, while the evening traditionally closes with a fireworks display. The event is coordinated by the parish and the archpriest of Francavilla, with the involvement of the municipal administration, the Confraternity, the Pro Loco, and local associations.
The dates for the 2026 edition of the Sant'Euplio Festival in Francavilla di Sicilia have not yet been announced. The patronal feast is traditionally held on the last Sunday of August and, following previous editions, includes the procession of the Saint's statue with neighborhood banners, an itinerant historical theatrical re-enactment of the life of the deacon Euplio, and a recreational program organized by the districts, featuring tastings of traditional dishes, performances, and fireworks.
The detailed program will be published by the parish and local associations in the weeks leading up to the event.
