The patronal feast of the San Gerardo hamlet, on Mount Etna, held on the last Sunday of August

The San Gerardo Maiella Festival is the most anticipated event of the year for the hamlet of San Gerardo, a tiny village in the municipality of Piedimonte Etneo, in the province of Catania and in the heart of the Etna region of Sicily. Situated at an altitude of about 515 meters on the northeastern slopes of Mount Etna, the hamlet has only a few dozen residents, but on the last Sunday of August, it comes alive to welcome worshippers and visitors from Piedimonte, Linguaglossa, and neighboring towns.
Devotion to San Gerardo Maiella dates back to the 1920s: according to tradition, a local woman discovered an image of the young saint, sparking a popular veneration that led to the construction of an initial chapel and, subsequently, the church dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and San Gerardo. The building, elevated to a sanctuary in 2000, houses the saint's relic and image, which are displayed during the festivities. San Gerardo Maiella is especially invoked as the protector of mothers and expectant women, and a traditional pilgrimage of expectant mothers is held at the sanctuary.
The festival is preceded by a triduum of spiritual preparation and culminates on Sunday with a solemn Eucharistic celebration. In the evening, after Mass, the statue of the saint is carried in procession through the village streets, which are festively decorated and adorned with artistic illuminations, amidst moments of prayer and reflection.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival preserves the most authentic popular traditions:
The San Gerardo Maiella Festival represents an authentic heritage of popular traditions and folklore in the Etna region of Sicily: a moment when the small community of Piedimonte Etneo gathers around its religious and rural identity, in a landscape dominated by the volcano and the vineyards of Mount Etna. For visitors, it is an opportunity to discover a patronal feast that remains intimate and deeply rooted, far from the large-scale mass events.
The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced: the festival is traditionally held on the last Sunday of August.
