Seven districts compete with allegorical floats in the Val Vibrata
The Sant'Egidio alla Vibrata Carnival, also known as the Santegidiese Carnival, is one of the most popular carnival celebrations in the Val Vibrata district, on the border between the Teramo area of Abruzzo and the Piceno region. Every winter, the municipality of Sant'Egidio alla Vibrata, in the province of Teramo, transforms into a vast open-air stage: from Fat Thursday to Shrove Tuesday, the town streets and the central Piazza Umberto I host parades, masks, music, and entertainment for all ages.
The heart of the festival is the challenge between the seven town districts, which build as many themed allegorical floats each year. These are true scenic masterpieces, the result of months of work that weave together artisanal craftsmanship, artistic skills, and popular passion. The participating districts are Madonna delle Grazie, Passo del Mulino, Faraone, Ponte, Paolantonio, Villa Marchesa, and Villa Mattoni: dozens of families gather around each float, enlivening the parade with costumes, choreography, and dances. In total, thousands of costumed participants take part in the procession.
The program traditionally features two major float parades through the town center, culminating with entertainment in Piazza Umberto I. On the second day of the parade, the winning float is announced, determined in part by the popular jury's vote. The processions are accompanied by events dedicated to children, such as the Children's Party, evening galas, and festive moments that span the entire Shrove week.
With a history spanning over thirty years, the Santegidiese Carnival has returned with great momentum after a long hiatus, becoming a symbol of vitality, belonging, and sharing for the community. The organization is now entrusted to the Vivi Sant'Egidio association, with the patronage of the Municipality and the support of the Pro Loco, which in recent years have introduced logistical improvements such as a free shuttle service and the return of the traditional lottery.
Beyond being a deeply identity-driven festival for Sant'Egidio alla Vibrata, the Carnival attracts visitors from neighboring towns and the nearby provinces of Teramo and Ascoli Piceno, confirming its status as one of the reference events for the Abruzzo and Piceno carnival scene. Admission to all scheduled events is free.
The 2026 edition, the thirty-first, took place in Sant'Egidio alla Vibrata (TE) from February 12 to 22, 2026, with a program that accompanied the community from Fat Thursday to Shrove Tuesday and until the following Sunday. For the first time, the organization was handled by the new association Vivi Sant'Egidio, led by president Marco Muscelli.
The seven districts presented their floats: Madonna delle Grazie with "Respira la realtร ", Passo del Mulino with "La maledizione di Medusa", Faraone with "Il ruggito d'America", Ponte with "I custodi della natura", Paolantonio with "Il Gobbo di Notre Dame", Villa Marchesa with "Sogni e speranze di un bambino", and Villa Mattoni with "Cappuccetto Rosso".
Due to adverse weather conditions, the parade originally scheduled for Sunday, February 15, was postponed to Sunday, February 22 (from 2:30 PM), while the second parade was held on Tuesday, February 17. The float from the Villa Marchesa district triumphed with "Sogni e speranze di un bambino". Among the novelties of the edition were the free shuttle service, the return of the lottery, and the popular jury. Admission is free.
The parades take place in the center of Sant'Egidio alla Vibrata (TE), with arrivals and entertainment in Piazza Umberto I.
By car: A14 Val Vibrata exit, then SS259 towards Sant'Egidio alla Vibrata. The nearest train station is Ancarano-Sant'Egidio/Val Vibrata; from Teramo and Ascoli Piceno, the town can be reached in about 30-40 minutes.
Admission to all events is free. On parade days, a free shuttle service to and from parking areas is provided.
