Fire, animal blessings, and community celebrations in Casaluce
The Sant'Antuono Bonfire is one of the most cherished winter traditions in Casaluce, a small town in the province of Caserta, Campania. Every year, around January 17th, the community gathers around a great fire to celebrate Saint Anthony the Abbot, popularly known as Sant'Antuono, the protector of animals and the farming world. The event is organized by the Pro Loco Casaluci at their headquarters on Corso Umberto I, with the patronage of the Municipality of Casaluce.
The tradition of the Sant'Antuono bonfires is rooted in the meeting of Christian faith and ancient folk customs linked to the seasonal cycle. The fire, known throughout Campania as 'o fucarazzo or 'o cippo 'e Sant'Antuono, represents purification, the saint's victory, and the hope for a prosperous new year. In the Caserta area, this custom survives in numerous towns, and in Casaluce, it maintains its authentic and participatory character.
Saint Anthony the Abbot is the patron saint of livestock and domestic animals; for this reason, alongside the bonfire, the blessing of the animals takes place—a moment highly anticipated by families who bring their dogs, cats, and small pets to receive a blessing. Along with the animals, the fire itself is blessed, serving as the symbolic heart of the entire evening.
The afternoon begins with gathering wood and building the traditional pyre. Once the bonfire is lit, the festival comes alive: guests can taste local products prepared by the Pro Loco and enjoy music, singing, and dancing in the warmth of the flames, in an atmosphere of authentic village conviviality. It is a precious opportunity to experience a popular tradition of Campania and rediscover the community's bond with its history and land.
On January 17, 2026, Casaluce renewed the tradition of the Sant'Antuono Bonfire at the Pro Loco Casaluci headquarters on Corso Umberto I. The day began with gathering wood and building the pyre; in the evening, the great bonfire—the heart of the celebration—was lit.
The blessing of the animals and the fire was officiated by the parish priest, while the community gathered around the flames to taste local Pro Loco products and spend an evening filled with music, singing, and dancing. The initiative was held under the patronage of the Municipality of Casaluce, with members of the municipal administration in attendance.
