The great January polenta feast in the historic center of Morolo
The Sant'Antonio Polenta Festival is one of the most anticipated winter events in Morolo, a small town in the province of Frosinone, in southern Lazio. At the end of January, when the cold settles over the Lepini Mountains, the community gathers around a large cauldron to share hot polenta: a simple, ancient gesture that has marked the calendar of local popular festivals for decades.
The event is tied to the cult of Saint Anthony the Abbot, the patron saint of domestic animals and the farming world, celebrated on January 17th throughout the Ciociaria region. In local villages, the occasion is traditionally accompanied by bonfires, the blessing of animals, and, of course, polentate—moments of togetherness where humble peasant food becomes a collective celebration.
The heart of the day is the polenta prepared according to a recipe passed down through generations, cooked by the volunteers of Pro Loco Morolo and served steaming hot to visitors. This is no mere food distribution; the preparation, with its long cooking time and constant stirring, is a spectacle in itself, drawing families, curious onlookers, and enthusiasts to gather around the cauldron.
The festival is held in the historic center of Morolo, along the Sant'Antonio promenade, near the parking area before the traffic light, and in the Piazza Ernesto Biondi area. Perched on the slopes of the Lepini Mountains with views over the Sacco Valley, the village offers a picturesque setting with stone alleys, panoramic vistas, and a square that becomes the town's open-air living room for the day.
Since the historic center is difficult to access by car, the Pro Loco organizes a free shuttle departing from the market square in the Madonna del Piano area, reaching Piazza della Libertà (the Gate), with return trips guaranteed throughout the event.
The atmosphere is that of an authentic village festival: no staged scenery, just improvised tables, neighbors chatting, children running through the square, and music accompanying the meal. It is a deeply family-oriented and popular event, well-attended by residents but welcoming to visitors arriving from neighboring Ciociaria towns—Supino, Sgurgola, Patrica, Ferentino—and from Frosinone.
For those unfamiliar with the area, the Polentata is also a great opportunity to discover a corner of Lazio off the beaten path of mass tourism: the town of Morolo retains a clearly legible medieval layout, and the Lepini Mountains landscape in winter has a particularly crisp, clear light.
The organization is entirely handled by the Pro Loco Morolo, which has managed this event for years alongside other local calendar highlights. The work is voluntary, and the initiative relies on community participation: a model of popular celebration common throughout Lazio and particularly vibrant in the small towns of the Frosinone province.
In case of bad weather, the event is postponed to the following Sunday, according to the procedure communicated annually by the organizers.
On Sunday, January 25, 2026, Morolo renewed its most cherished winter appointment. The Pro Loco Morolo set up the festival along the Sant'Antonio promenade, near the parking area before the traffic light, in the village's historic center.
From 12:30 PM to 3:30 PM, steaming polenta was served, cooked according to the village's historic recipe, while the food stall offered sandwiches, wine, and drinks. Live music accompanied the lunch in an atmosphere of great conviviality.
To facilitate access to the village, the organizers provided a free shuttle departing from the market square in the Madonna del Piano area with a stop at Piazza della Libertà (the Gate), including return trips. In case of rain, the event was scheduled to be postponed to Sunday, February 1, 2026.
