While the liturgical calendar marks the feast of Saint Anthony of Padua on June 13th, in Borgagne, a small village in the municipality of Melendugno (Lecce province), the most cherished patronal festival takes place in late August, known by locals as 'Sant'Antonio grande'. It is a time when the entire community entrusts itself to the protection of the miracle-worker and Doctor of the Church, renewing a bond of devotion that has defined the village for generations.
The saint, who passed away at just 36, is remembered not only as a preacher but above all as the saint of healing and grace, invoked by the faithful of Salento as an intercessor. Religious celebrations, led by the parish clergy, bring together families, returning emigrants, and visitors from neighboring towns. The festival is experienced as an intense moment of communion and collective identity.
The religious heart of the event is the solemn procession carrying the image of Saint Anthony through the village streets, preceded and followed by Eucharistic celebrations in the mother church. Alongside the sacred dimension, the square lights up with public festivities:
Borgagne is located just a few kilometers from the Adriatic coast of Salento, nestled between Melendugno, Otranto, and the seaside resorts of San Foca and Torre dell'Orso. The Sant'Antonio festival is a highlight of the summer in the Municipality of Melendugno, Puglia, offering visitors the chance to experience an authentic Salento village feastโa blend of the sacred and the secular, brass music, and fireworks, far from the most crowded tourist circuits.
The official dates for the 2026 edition of the 'Sant'Antonio grande' festival in Borgagne have not yet been announced. Based on the tradition of recent years, the festivities will be held in late August in Piazza Sant'Antonio, featuring the procession of the patron's effigy, Eucharistic celebrations in the mother church, illuminations, brass band concerts, and the traditional closing fireworks display.
The detailed program will be published by the festival committee and the parish of Borgagne in the weeks leading up to the event.
