Every first Sunday of July, the village of Castro dei Volsci, in the province of Frosinone, celebrates the Sant'Antonio Festival and Market, one of the most anticipated events of the Ciociaria summer. The day combines popular devotion, linked to the venerated Madonna del Piano, with a large fair that transforms the town's streets and squares into a bustling open-air market.

A festival moved for the farmers

The feast of Sant'Antonio, traditionally celebrated in winter, was moved to the first Sunday of July in Castro dei Volsci. The reason is deeply rooted in the rural world: the summer date allowed the harvest to be completed without hindering the farmers' work. Even today, this choice reflects the agricultural soul of the territory and the community's bond with the land.

The market and the fair

The heart of the day is the large annual fair, organized by the Municipality of Castro dei Volsci, which publishes the market layout and stall assignments each year. Dozens of stalls line the streets of the town center:

• stalls selling various goods, clothing, and household items;
• artistic handicrafts and local artisanal products;
• food stands with tastings of typical Ciociaria products;
• music and entertainment accompanying the festivities.

The Madonna del Piano and the bond with Ausonia

The festival has its roots in the devotion to the Madonna del Piano, whose image is kept in the church of the same name in Piazza del Mercato. Tradition links Castro dei Volsci to the nearby town of Ausonia through an ancient story of apparitions and brotherhood between the two communities, which have maintained a relationship of pilgrimage and mutual exchange over the centuries.

The Sant'Antonio Festival and Market is not just a commercial event: it is a gathering for the entire Castro dei Volsci community and visitors from neighboring towns.
