About Sant'Antero Festival

Every year, on the first weekend of July, Casalbuono gathers around its patron saint for the Sant'Antero Patronal Festival. In this small town in the Vallo di Diano, in the province of Salerno, the day begins at dawn with the historic fair along Via Roma—featuring livestock, agricultural tools, and a variety of goods—followed by the procession of the saint with his silver staff, accompanied by the Madonna delle Grazie and the local brotherhood. Two days of devotion, market stalls, and authentic village celebration.

A patronal festival moved to mid-summer

Sant'Antero, Pope and martyr, is the patron saint of Casalbuono, a town of just over a thousand inhabitants perched at an altitude of 661 meters in the Vallo di Diano, in the province of Salerno, Campania. His liturgical feast day falls on January 3rd, but the deep winter of the Lucanian-Campanian Apennines was never the best time for an outdoor fair. Consequently, the community long ago moved the fair and external festivities to the first Saturday of July, when the days are long, emigrants return to the village, and the streets can host stalls and processions.

The result is one of the most heartfelt festivals in the area: two dates that the Municipality of Casalbuono regulates every year with a specific traffic ordinance, a concrete sign of how much the event impacts the life of the town.

The Sant'Antero Fair along Via Roma

The secular heart of the festival is the fair, which stretches along Via Roma, the old route of provincial road 140, from the Carvallena area to the bridge over the Bagnoli stream. It begins very early, at dawn: it is a traditional village fair where, alongside livestock and the animal market, one finds agricultural equipment, household goods, clothing, sweets, and typical products from both local and neighboring areas.

For a few hours, the main street of Casalbuono returns to what it was for generations: a place of exchange where people haggle, check livestock prices, and meet breeders and traders from the nearby towns of the Vallo di Diano and the neighboring Basilicata region. This is what distinguishes this event from the many summer food festivals in the South: here, the fair is not a folkloric accessory, but a living economic activity.

The procession of the saint with the silver staff

The religious aspect culminates in the procession, one of the most recognizable moments of local devotion. The parade is led by the Brotherhood of the Brothers of Sant'Antero, who precede the statue of the patron saint: the saint is depicted with a silver staff, a detail that makes him immediately identifiable. Bringing up the rear is the Madonna delle Grazie, who follows Sant'Antero through the streets of the village.

The procession winds through the historic center, pausing in the main squares—Carlo Pisacane, Cappelli-Germino, and Giuseppe Garibaldi—accompanied by the prayers and chants of the faithful, with a marching band and festive lights marking the way.

Evenings in the square

At sunset, the festival changes pace. Piazza Cappelli-Germino and Piazza M. Calabria are closed to traffic and parking, transforming into the town's open-air living room: food stalls, live music, shows, and the ritual evening stroll that brings together residents, vacationers, and families who have returned for the occasion. The evenings continue until midnight on both days of the festival.

Casalbuono, a mountain village in the Vallo di Diano

Casalbuono was founded in the 13th century as a feudal dependency of the Abbey of Santa Maria di Cadossa and later passed, via a 1514 papal bull, to the Certosa di Padula; until 1862 it was called Casalnuovo. The municipal territory, covering just under 35 square kilometers, is nestled between the Gioncolo and Monte Difesa peaks and is part of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park as well as the Vallo di Diano Mountain Community.

Visitors arriving for the festival will find much more than just an event: a stone village overlooking the valley, trails and woods within easy reach, and the cuisine of the Vallo di Diano, featuring Podolica caciocavallo cheese, meats, legumes, and fresh homemade pasta.

Why it's worth it

  • An authentic fair, with animals and local goods, which survives in its traditional form.
  • A procession with unmistakable features: the brotherhood, the silver staff, and the Madonna delle Grazie.
  • The hospitality of a town of a thousand inhabitants that doubles its population for two days.
  • The opportunity to combine the visit with an exploration of the Vallo di Diano and the Certosa di Padula.
