Two days of historical re-enactment and a challenge between the five districts in the heart of the Florentine Chianti
In the heart of the Florentine Chianti, the Sancascianese Medieval Carnival is one of the most cherished events in San Casciano in Val di Pesa, in the Province of Florence, Tuscany. This is not your typical carnival with masks and confetti: here, the village dons its medieval attire and becomes the stage for a grand historical re-enactment set between the 13th and 14th centuries, when the lands of San Casciano were contested between Florence and its enemies.
The narrative thread of the festival is rooted in the events that marked the territory in the 14th century, particularly the siege of 1325 linked to the exploits of Castruccio Castracani. From this historical memory arises the challenge between the five districts of the village—Cavallo, Gallo, Giglio, Leone, and Torre—which each year perform short theatrical plays inspired by medieval stories and themes. A jury of experts, composed of historians, professors, journalists, artists, and entertainment figures, evaluates the performances and proclaims the winning district, which earns the prestigious "key to the village."
During the two days, the streets and squares of the historic center—from Piazza della Repubblica to Via Lucardesi, up to Piazza Pierozzi and Parco Dante Tacci—fill with medieval encampments, artisan markets, themed stalls, and workshops. Among the most beloved attractions are jugglers, stilt walkers, jesters, and falconry displays, alongside archery exhibitions and moments of folk music and dance. The atmosphere captivates both adults and children in a journey that mixes spectacle, tradition, and fun.
The food and wine dimension, an integral part of the Chianti identity, is not to be missed: the Slow Food Earth Market, food stands, and AperiSlow sessions allow visitors to taste typical products and local specialties. The festival concludes on Sunday evening with a grand convivial dinner that brings together the districts and visitors alike.
Organized by the Municipality of San Casciano in Val di Pesa together with the Pro Loco and the districts, with the support of local entities, the Sancascianese Medieval Carnival is now a permanent fixture in the Florentine Chianti events calendar. Each year, it welcomes delegations from other Italian carnivals and thousands of visitors, becoming an opportunity to rediscover local history and experience the village in its most authentic and communal dimension.
The 14th edition of the Sancascianese Medieval Carnival brought the Middle Ages back to the historic center of San Casciano in Val di Pesa over the weekend of March 28 and 29, 2026, with two days full of re-enactment, spectacle, and gastronomy. As always, the protagonists were the five districts—Cavallo, Gallo, Giglio, Leone, and Torre—engaged in the challenge for the key to the village.
Throughout the two days, the village is brought to life by jugglers, stilt walkers, jesters, falconers, musicians, and archery demonstrations.
San Casciano in Val di Pesa is located along the Via Cassia (SR2), about 17 km from Florence. By car, from the Firenze-Certosa exit of the A1 motorway, you can reach the village in a few minutes. The nearest train station is Firenze Santa Maria Novella, from which suburban buses depart directly to San Casciano.
During the event, a free shuttle service runs approximately every 15 minutes, connecting parking areas to the historic center, where traffic is restricted for the event.
Access to the streets and squares of the event is free. Some activities, such as theatrical performances at the Museo Ghelli, may require reservations (tel. 055 8256385). The closing dinner requires a reservation.
We recommend comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for the village's cobblestone streets. It is an ideal time to combine your visit with a tasting in the surrounding Chianti wineries.
