About Sancascianese Medieval Carnival

Every year, the Sancascianese Medieval Carnival transforms San Casciano in Val di Pesa into a 13th and 14th-century village. Historical pageants, encampments, medieval markets, jugglers, stilt walkers, and falconers bring the squares to life, while the five ancient districts—Cavallo, Gallo, Giglio, Leone, and Torre—compete to win the "key to the village." A signature event that blends historical re-enactment, entertainment, and the typical gastronomy of the Chianti region.

The Carnival that takes you back in time

In the heart of the Florentine Chianti, the Sancascianese Medieval Carnival is one of the most cherished events in San Casciano in Val di Pesa, in the Province of Florence, Tuscany. This is not your typical carnival with masks and confetti: here, the village dons its medieval attire and becomes the stage for a grand historical re-enactment set between the 13th and 14th centuries, when the lands of San Casciano were contested between Florence and its enemies.

The siege and the challenge between the districts

The narrative thread of the festival is rooted in the events that marked the territory in the 14th century, particularly the siege of 1325 linked to the exploits of Castruccio Castracani. From this historical memory arises the challenge between the five districts of the village—Cavallo, Gallo, Giglio, Leone, and Torre—which each year perform short theatrical plays inspired by medieval stories and themes. A jury of experts, composed of historians, professors, journalists, artists, and entertainment figures, evaluates the performances and proclaims the winning district, which earns the prestigious "key to the village."

A village transformed into a medieval town

During the two days, the streets and squares of the historic center—from Piazza della Repubblica to Via Lucardesi, up to Piazza Pierozzi and Parco Dante Tacci—fill with medieval encampments, artisan markets, themed stalls, and workshops. Among the most beloved attractions are jugglers, stilt walkers, jesters, and falconry displays, alongside archery exhibitions and moments of folk music and dance. The atmosphere captivates both adults and children in a journey that mixes spectacle, tradition, and fun.

Flavors of Chianti and hospitality

The food and wine dimension, an integral part of the Chianti identity, is not to be missed: the Slow Food Earth Market, food stands, and AperiSlow sessions allow visitors to taste typical products and local specialties. The festival concludes on Sunday evening with a grand convivial dinner that brings together the districts and visitors alike.

A signature local event

Organized by the Municipality of San Casciano in Val di Pesa together with the Pro Loco and the districts, with the support of local entities, the Sancascianese Medieval Carnival is now a permanent fixture in the Florentine Chianti events calendar. Each year, it welcomes delegations from other Italian carnivals and thousands of visitors, becoming an opportunity to rediscover local history and experience the village in its most authentic and communal dimension.
