Two evenings of music and devotion in the village of San Barbato, in Irpinia
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Every summer, in early August, the small village of San Barbato, in the municipality of Manocalzati (Province of Avellino, Campania), breaks its usual silence and transforms into an open-air stage. The SanBa Fest began as a modern offshoot of the historic patron saint's feast and, in just a few years, has established itself as one of the most anticipated events in this corner of Irpinia, just a few kilometers from Avellino and the Sabato Valley.
The village takes its name from San Barbato, Bishop of Benevento in the 7th century, a central figure in the religious life of inland Irpinia. The village has always dedicated a feast to him, which local press has described as «more religious than civil»: a solemn mass, a procession with the saint's statue through the village streets, and musical accompaniment by the brass band. Alongside San Barbato, the community also honors Saint Anthony of Padua, with celebrations traditionally structured around a triduum of masses leading up to the solemn day.
Organization is entrusted to a committee of volunteers that renews itself every year: it is the local residents, not an external entity, who raise funds, set up the square, and build the program. It is this spontaneous character that gives the festival its familiar tone, far removed from mass-produced events.
In 2022, a group of young people with strong local ties added a full-fledged music festival to the patronal feast, with the stated goal of «bringing the village back to life». The first edition, held on August 8th and 9th, brought well-known names from the Neapolitan and Irpinian scene to the square: Jovine, Peppoh, Tartaglia Aneuro, Funky Pushertz, the Schustér Band—playing folk, blues, and funk with original songs in dialect—and La Maschera, with DJ sets by Joe Clemente and Vinyl Giampy closing out the two evenings. Subsequent editions have confirmed the formula: open-air concerts from 8 PM until late at night, with no admission fee, right among the village houses.
The village is also known for its castle, a historic Lombard-era residence that overlooks the surrounding countryside and hosts concerts, shows, and receptions throughout the year. The old parish church, demolished after the 1980 earthquake, was the other hub of the village's religious life: its absence remains part of the community's collective memory. Visitors arriving in the evening find a small urban layout where the square, the castle, and the countryside all touch.
As in every village festival in Irpinia, food is an integral part of the evening. The stalls set up around the square offer local specialties, desserts, local cheeses, and regional wines: we are just a few kilometers from the hills of Greco di Tufo, Fiano di Avellino, and Taurasi. There is no shortage of beer, cocktails, and drinks, in an open-air setting where the pace is that of slow August evenings.
The SanBa Fest is traditionally held in the first days of August, with the two musical evenings taking place on August 8th and 9th in recent editions. The detailed program is released shortly before the event by the San Barbato Festival Committee through their social media channels. For those visiting Irpinia in summer, it is an authentic opportunity to meet a small but tenacious community, far from the most beaten tourist paths of Campania.
The 2026 edition of the SanBa Fest has not yet been officially announced: at the moment, neither the dates nor the musical program for the feast of San Barbato, a village in the municipality of Manocalzati (Province of Avellino, Campania), have been published.
The reference remains the calendar of previous editions, which saw the festival concentrated in the first days of August, with a triduum of masses, a procession accompanied by the brass band, and two evenings of live music in the square, alongside the committee's food stalls. Updates are usually released a few weeks before the event on the San Barbato Festival Committee's social media channels.
We recommend checking the dates and program directly with the organizers before traveling.
