About San Zopito

Every year, during the Pentecost weekend, the village of Loreto Aprutino (Province of Pescara) celebrates its Patron Saint with one of the most evocative traditions in Abruzzo: the kneeling of the ox. A pure white ox, trained for forty days and adorned with red drapes with an angel on its back, bows its knees as the relics of San Zopito pass by. Three days blending the sacred and the profane, featuring masses, a procession, a historical re-enactment of the Vetturali, free concerts, fireworks, and a raffle.

The quintessential peasant festival of Abruzzo

In the heart of the Pescara hills, the village of Loreto Aprutino, in the Province of Pescara, has preserved for over three centuries one of the most fascinating folk rituals in Abruzzo: the San Zopito Festival, the Patron Saint. Linked to Whit Monday, it is considered the quintessential peasant festival, an authentic expression of a rural world that still identifies with its symbols today.

The legend of the kneeling ox

The tradition dates back to 1711, when the relic of the young martyr Zòpito arrived in Loreto Aprutino. According to popular legend, as the procession passed through the town and everyone knelt before the Saint, a farmer continued plowing his field undeterred. His ox, however, bent its knees in veneration, defying its master. Since that day, every year, a pure white ox covered in a red cloth, with an angel on its back, travels through the narrow streets of the village and kneels before the main churches as the relics pass by.

Three days between the sacred and the profane

The program weaves together religious and civil dimensions. Liturgical celebrations in the church of San Pietro and the solemn procession with the Patron Saint's relics are accompanied by moments of great popular participation:

  • The historical re-enactment of the return of the Vetturali and the Ox of San Zopito, recalling the ancient bond with the world of carters;
  • The blessing of the Vetturali and the Ox, a ritual that highlights the relationship between the Saint and the peasant civilization;
  • The morning musical performance by the "I. Padula "I. Padula" Band of Collecorvino, which also accompanies the sacred procession;
  • Free evening concerts in the square, fireworks, and the traditional raffle draw.

The most anticipated moment

The highlight of the festival is the kneeling of the ox: when the relics of San Zopito cross the square during the procession, the animal, patiently trained in the preceding weeks, bends its front legs in a gesture that combines faith, peasant memory, and spectacle. It is a moment of silence and emotion that attracts visitors from all over Abruzzo to Loreto Aprutino every year.

The festival is organized by the San Zopito Cultural and Recreational Association with the support of the Municipality of Loreto Aprutino, and all civil events and concerts are free to attend.
