The patronal feast of Arsita, blending faith and community in the heart of the Fino Valley
Every year on September 10th, the municipality of Arsita, a small village in the province of Teramo, Abruzzo, celebrates its patron saint, Saint Nicholas of Tolentino. The patronal feast is the most anticipated and well-attended event on the local calendar: a time when the entire community, including those who have moved away and return specifically for the occasion, gathers around the figure of the Augustinian saint venerated as their protector.
Arsita is situated at an altitude of approximately 470 meters in the upper Fino Valley, within the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. Dominated to the north by the imposing silhouette of the Gran Sasso and Monte Camicia, the village still retains the charm of small Apennine towns. Until 1905, it was called Bacucco: the name was changed to Arsita by Royal Decree of Victor Emmanuel III, at the request of the inhabitants themselves. From its medieval past, the ruins of Bacucco Castle remain, along with churches of great interest such as the parish church of Santa Vittoria and the 15th-century Santa Maria d'Aragona.
The heart of the festival is religious in nature. The patron saint's day is marked by Holy Masses celebrated in the parish church and culminates in the traditional procession with the statue of Saint Nicholas of Tolentino, which winds through the streets of the historic center accompanied by the faithful. Saint Nicholas, an Augustinian friar who lived in the 13th century and is linked to the nearby Marche city of Tolentino, is invoked by the people of Arsita as an intercessor and protector, according to a devotion passed down from generation to generation.
Surrounding the liturgical celebrations are the civic and social events that make the patronal feast an opportunity for the entire village to gather. The event represents a cornerstone of local identity for Arsita, an occasion to rediscover the popular traditions of the Fino Valley and its culture, defined by shepherding, craftsmanship, and authentic gastronomy that includes ancient dishes such as coatto and mountain pecorino cheese.
The 2026 edition of the Patronal Feast of Saint Nicholas of Tolentino in Arsita (province of Teramo) will take place on September 10, 2026. The date is confirmed, in line with the liturgical commemoration of the patron saint, celebrated every year on this day.
As is customary, the day will be marked by Eucharistic celebrations in the parish church of Santa Vittoria and the traditional procession with the statue of the saint through the streets of the village's historic center, in the heart of the Fino Valley and the Gran Sasso National Park. The full program, including mass times and civic events, will be published by the organizers closer to the festival.
Arsita can be reached by car from the Adriatic coast by traveling up the Fino Valley, or from the interior via the roads connecting the Teramo area of the Gran Sasso. The nearest train stations are in Pescara or Giulianova, from which you can continue by car towards the hinterland.
The patronal feast is celebrated on September 10th of each year. Religious celebrations take place at the parish church of Santa Vittoria and in the village's historic center.
Located within the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, Arsita is an excellent base for combining the festival with a nature hike in the Fino Valley. For information on the updated program, it is advisable to contact the parish or the Municipality of Arsita.
