Float parades, masquerades, and the Yellow Pizza Festival in San Vito Romano
The San Vito Carnival is the grand winter celebration of San Vito Romano, a village perched about 650 meters above sea level in the Monti Prenestini, near Rome. Over several days, from early February through Shrove Tuesday, the historic center and the «V. Bachelet» Villa Comunale fill with confetti, music, and costumes, creating a festive atmosphere that unites the entire town: schools, associations, families, and visitors from neighboring towns and the capital alike.
The heart of the event lies in the float parades, meticulously crafted with imagination by local groups. The processions traditionally start from the Viale Giovanni XXIII parking lot and wind through the village center, accompanied by masked groups, dancing, and roving performers. The costume contest is a highlight, awarding the most original and creative outfits and turning the audience into the stars of the show.
A distinctive feature of the San Vito Carnival is its deep bond with local gastronomy. During the main weekend, the festivities intertwine with the historic Yellow Pizza and Broccoli Festival, which reaches its 29th edition in 2026. In a covered, heated area at the Villa Comunale, visitors can taste the signature golden-hued polenta pizza, served with sautéed broccoli, frittegli, zazzicchie, and local wines—genuine expressions of San Vito's peasant cuisine, served in a lively atmosphere with DJ sets, group dances, and entertainment.
The grand finale takes place on Shrove Tuesday: in the morning, local school children parade alongside a float, while the afternoon features a large masquerade party at the Villa Comunale, culminating in the traditional burning of King Carnival—a propitiatory rite that symbolically closes the carnival season and welcomes the arrival of spring.
The event is promoted by the Municipality of San Vito Romano in collaboration with the Pro Loco and the Il Pellegrino Association, involving the local marching band, majorettes, and many town volunteers. It is a family-friendly, free, and genuine carnival that perfectly captures the spirit of Lazio's villages: here, folk tradition is not a tourist re-enactment, but a celebration truly lived by the community.
The 2026 San Vito Carnival offered a rich program spanning four days. Sunday, February 8, marked the first float parade, starting at 2:30 PM from the Viale Giovanni XXIII parking lot, with a procession of masked groups and roving performances through the village center. The weekend of February 14 and 15 combined carnival fun with gastronomy: Saturday hosted the 29th Yellow Pizza and Broccoli Festival at the Villa Comunale, followed by an evening masquerade party with DJ sets and group dances; Sunday featured the second float parade and the awards ceremony for the best costumes. Shrove Tuesday, February 17, saw the grand finale with the school parade in the morning, an afternoon masquerade party in the heated indoor venue of the Villa Comunale, and the burning of King Carnival to close the edition. Traffic during parade days was regulated by Ordinance no. 8/2026 of the Municipality of San Vito Romano.
By car: San Vito Romano is located about 60 km east of Rome in the Monti Prenestini. It can be reached via the Via Casilina or the A24 motorway, following local roads toward Genazzano and San Vito Romano. On parade days, the center is closed to traffic; it is recommended to park in the designated areas on the outskirts of the village.
All carnival events are free to attend; food at the festival is purchased directly at the stands.
Evening parties and the food festival take place in a covered, heated area at the Villa Comunale, but for the outdoor February parades, it is advisable to dress warmly. Information is available from the Municipality of San Vito Romano (+39 06 9571006).
