In the heart of the Aniene Valley, nestled among the Prenestini Mountains, the medieval village of Ciciliano (Metropolitan City of Rome, Lazio) relives the glory of its past for one night. The Panarda is one of Ciciliano's oldest social traditions. The name is thought to derive from pan (bread), symbolizing the abundance and generosity of the collective banquet. Its origins are also linked to the legend of a child from the Serafini family saved from a wolf through the intercession of Saint Anthony the Abbot; in gratitude, the family vowed to distribute free food to the community every year.

The most famous moment in its history, however, is 1581: during an apostolic visit, a delegate of Bishop Annibale Grassi deemed the banquet "scandalous and unreligious" and attempted to ban it. The citizens, deeply attached to their festival, never abandoned the tradition, which has survived to this day as a symbol of identity and popular resistance.

As dusk falls, the village fills with figures in period attire. The historical procession winds through the alleys with performances by the Ciciliano flag-wavers and musicians, while every corner of the historic center comes alive with street performers: fire-eaters, minstrels, acrobats, jesters, and stilt-walkers. One square is dedicated to medieval games for both adults and children, creating an atmosphere that involves the entire town, decorated with torches and banners.

The Cucine di Corte (Court Kitchens) offer recipes inspired by ancient customs, served in handcrafted Deruta pottery that participants can keep as a souvenir. It is the gastronomic heart of the Panarda, where forgotten flavors and typical products of the Aniene Valley take center stage.

The Challenge of the Four Districts

The Panarda tradition historically revolves around the challenge between the four districts of the town—Capopiana, Castelluccio, Porta di Sotto, and Selciata—which compete for the title with lavish menus, sometimes featuring dozens of courses, judged on preparation, presentation, and wine pairing.
