Marian devotion in the village of the Monti Dauni
The Our Lady of Mount Carmel Festival is the religious heart of summer in Roseto Valfortore, a small village in the Monti Dauni included in the "Most Beautiful Villages in Italy" circuit, in the most inland and mountainous part of the Province of Foggia, in Puglia. At the center of the festivities is the venerated statue of the Virgin of Mount Carmel, which arrived in the town in 1825 and has since been guarded and honored by the Confraternity of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, founded in 1829. In 2025, the Roseto community celebrated the bicentenary of the arrival of the sacred effigy (1825-2025) with particular solemnity.
For the community of Roseto Valfortore, Our Lady of Mount Carmel is not just a date on the liturgical calendar, but an identity trait that spans generations. Tradition links the festival to July 16th, the feast day of the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel, when the village lights up with a candlelight vigil and the community accompanies the statue through the stone alleys of the historic center. Other moments of popular faith typical of the town also revolve around this Marian devotion, such as the historic Procession of Paradise, in which the Madonna "meets" the images of the saints venerated in the churches of Roseto.
The festival intertwines the liturgical dimension with the secular one, according to a model dear to the communities of the Daunian Subappennino. Celebrations unfold between the Mother Church and the Church of Santa Maria Lauretana, with Holy Masses, rosaries, vespers, and solemn processions accompanied by the band. In the village squares - from Piazza Bartolomeo III di Capua to Largo Mons. Saggese - there is space for brass band concerts, musical performances, and fireworks that close the festive evenings.
The festival is also an opportunity to visit one of the most evocative villages in the Daunia region: cobbled alleys, stone portals, artisan workshops, and a landscape of woods and hills that extends along the Fortore valley, on the border between Puglia, Campania, and Molise. The Roseto Valfortore Summer itself offers, in the weeks around the Marian festival, gastronomic festivals linked to peasant culture (Porchetta Festival, Veal Festival, Wheat Festival with ancient crafts), folk evenings, puppet theater, and events for families and children, making July the liveliest time in the calendar of the Municipality of Roseto Valfortore.
Between moments of prayer and popular celebration, the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Festival tells the authentic face of the Monti Dauni: a land where religious devotion, historical memory, and a sense of belonging continue to keep the community united, also calling back to Roseto the many emigrants who return to the town precisely during the days of the festival.
The 2026 Our Lady of Mount Carmel Festival in Roseto Valfortore is confirmed as part of the "Summer 2026" program, which marks July as the heart of the calendar for the Monti Dauni village. The celebration is traditionally linked to the liturgical anniversary of July 16th, with religious rites between the Mother Church and the town streets, the candlelight vigil, and the accompaniment of the statue of the Virgin of Mount Carmel.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition, with times for Masses, processions, and secular events, will be published by the parish, the Municipality, and the Pro Loco in the weeks leading up to the festival.
