The international music competition bringing young talents, soloists, and ensembles to Rome
The San Vigilio In...Canto International Music Competition is one of the most popular competitive events for young musicians in the Lazio region. It takes place every year in Rome, in the EUR-Laurentino district (near Via Giorgio Sommer), attracting hundreds of contestants from all over Italy and various other countries. The event is promoted by the Associazione Culturale Sperimentiamo Arte Musica Teatro, a Roman organization active in music, theater, and arts education.
The competition is national and international in scope and is divided into numerous categories covering the entire spectrum of musical practice. It is open to soloists and ensembles, featuring both vocal and instrumental performances:
Each category is divided into sections based on age and skill level, ensuring that contestants with similar training backgrounds compete against one another—from young music school students to conservatory-level instrumentalists and singers. Participation is available both in-person and remotely to ensure wider access.
The format includes several days of auditions before a jury of professional teachers and musicians, followed by a final awards ceremony held in Rome. First, second, and third prizes are awarded in each category, along with honorable mentions and special awards: in the most recent edition, for example, the Special Prize named after Giovan Battista Cutolo was awarded. The event is more than just a competition; it is a formative experience designed to foster dialogue between students, teachers, and musical institutions.
Rooted in the Municipality of Rome and the Lazio Region, San Vigilio In...Canto has become a reference point for academies, schools, and musical associations in Central Italy. Every May, the EUR-Laurentino district comes alive with young performers, families, and teachers in an atmosphere that balances the seriousness of the competition with the shared joy of a music festival. For students from the many educational institutions in Lazio and neighboring regions, it represents a precious opportunity to perform in public, gauge their progress, and earn prestigious recognition.
The sixteenth edition of San Vigilio In...Canto was held in Rome from May 15 to 17, 2026, featuring auditions across various categories and a final awards ceremony. Hundreds of contestants participated in the instrument, opera, pop, ensemble, orchestra, and choir sections.
Among the awards of this edition, the Orchestra dell'Accademia Musicale Isolana from Isola del Liri won the First Prize in its category and the Special Prize dedicated to Giovan Battista Cutolo, while in the Pop Singing category, the first prize went to young student Silvia Vita from the Accademia Pentakaris. The edition confirmed the competition's role as a showcase for students from music schools and academies in Lazio and throughout Italy.
The three days of May 15, 16, and 17, 2026, were dedicated to auditions for the various competition categories:
Performances took place before a jury of professional teachers and musicians. The event concluded on May 17 with the awards ceremony, where category prizes, mentions, and special awards were presented.
The competition takes place in Rome, in the EUR-Laurentino district (Via Giorgio Sommer area, postcode 00142), in the southern part of the city. By car, it is easily accessible from the Grande Raccordo Anulare (GRA). By public transport, the area is served by Metro Line B (EUR-Laurentina station) and several urban bus lines.
