The Europa InCanto festival bringing opera closer to adults and children in Rome
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The InCanto Festival is a cultural outreach and entertainment project created by the Europa InCanto association, a Roman organization dedicated for years to engaging new audiences with music and opera. The core idea of the festival is simple yet ambitious: to bring the great Italian operatic tradition out of traditional concert halls and into vibrant, accessible city spaces where anyoneโregardless of age or familiarity with the repertoireโcan discover the beauty of operatic singing and symphonic music.
The program is structured around three main pillars that define its identity. The Opera Dialogues are interactive conversations where conductors, musicians, and singers engage directly with the audience, revealing the secrets and historical context of the most famous scores. The Music Tales guide listeners through symphonic music via storytelling, while the Symphonic Dialogues focus on the great classical repertoire. The stage features timeless titles such as Giuseppe Verdi's La Traviata, Gioachino Rossini's The Barber of Seville, and Gaetano Donizetti's The Elixir of Love, alongside beloved arias and operetta classics.
The heart of the festival lies in the "Opera Tales," educational and recreational workshops designed for children aged 5 to 12 and their families. Through play, singing, breathing exercises, and the creation of small stage elements, young participants learn about the plots and melodies of great masterpieces, becoming active and informed spectators. This is the same spirit that drives the Scuola InCanto school project, which involves thousands of kindergarten, primary, and secondary school students every year.
The event takes place in the Municipality of Rome, in the Lazio region, in locations of great historical and scenic value such as the Via Appia Antica area and major city parks, thereby enhancing the capital's heritage. A central role is played by the Europa InCanto Orchestra, an ensemble that brings together musicians under 35 and offers a prestigious stage to emerging young talents. Supported by the Lazio Region and selected as part of the capital's Roma Creativa 365 initiative, the InCanto Festival reaffirms its mission: to make opera a shared, free, and accessible heritage for everyone.
The 2026 edition of the InCanto Festival continues the path started by Europa InCanto in Rome: bringing the general public closer to opera and symphonic music through concerts, interactive dialogues, and educational workshops. The association's participation in the Roma Creativa 365 โ Culture all year round initiative confirms institutional support for the project in 2026.
The expected format follows the proven model: the Opera Dialogues, Music Tales, and Symphonic Dialogues sections, along with the "Opera Tales" workshops for children, with the Europa InCanto Orchestra showcasing young talent.
Dates and the detailed program for the 2026 edition have not yet been published. The event is expected to take place in Rome later this year, maintaining the format of previous editions (evening concerts, opera dialogues, and workshops for children and families). The program will be announced on the official Europa InCanto website and updated as soon as it becomes available.
The InCanto Festival editions have taken place in Rome in the Via Appia Antica area, particularly at the Ex Cartiera Latina โ Sala Nagasawa (Via Appia Antica 42) and in various city parks. We recommend checking the updated venue for each edition on the official website.
The Ex Cartiera Latina can be reached by car along the Via Appia Antica or by public transport from the Metro Line A stations (Colli Albani, Furio Camillo) and buses heading toward the Appia Antica Regional Park.
Admission to events is traditionally free; reservations may be required for children's workshops.
