About San Valerio Alvito

Every year, in the days following Pentecost, Alvito gathers around its patron saint, San Valerio Martire, for a celebration that weaves together devotion and community spirit. In the heart of the Comino Valley, in the province of Frosinone, this Ciociaria village honors the Roman soldier whose relics have rested in the Church of San Simeone Profeta since 1656. Featuring the historic Key Procession, a solemn parade accompanied by the Alvito City Band, food stalls, and fireworks, the community renews a centuries-old bond of faith.

The patronal feast of Alvito

The San Valerio Festival is the most anticipated event of the year for Alvito, an elegant village in the Comino Valley perched on the slopes of Monte Morrone, in the province of Frosinone, near the border with Abruzzo. For two days, the historic Ciociaria center, dominated by its medieval fortress and the Gallio Ducal Palace, comes alive with sacred rites, music, flavors, and lights, uniting the entire community in the name of its protector saint.

Who was San Valerio the Martyr?

According to tradition, San Valerio was a soldier in the Roman army who was martyred for his faith. His relics were transferred in 1656 from the catacombs of Santa Ciriaca in Rome to Alvito, where they still rest today in the Church of San Simeone Profeta. The saint is depicted with the palm of martyrdom and a spear, symbols of his service in the Roman legion. Popular devotion attributes numerous miraculous events to him, from protection against the plague to sparing the town from the bombings of the Second World War: Alvito was, along with San Donato Val di Comino, one of the few towns in the valley to escape serious damage.

The Key Procession

The liturgy sets the feast for the Tuesday after Pentecost, but to allow all residents to participate, the civil festivities are moved to the following Friday and Saturday. The most iconic moment is the historic Key Procession, which winds through the village streets to the Church of San Simeone, where the opening of the Urn of San Valerio and a concelebrated Mass take place. The following day, after Holy Mass, the statue of the patron saint is carried in procession through the town, accompanied by the Alvito City Band, in a blend of solemnity and choral participation.

Music, gastronomy, and fireworks

Alongside the religious dimension, the festival showcases the joyful side of local tradition. Numerous food stalls open, offering typical Ciociaria dishes, while the evenings are enlivened by show orchestras and folk music concerts in the square. There is no shortage of traditional games and tournaments for all ages, culminating in the grand finale with a lottery draw and fireworks that light up the valley sky.

A village to discover

The San Valerio Festival is also the perfect opportunity to visit Alvito, one of the most charming villages in southern Lazio: the Cantelmo Castle with its cylindrical towers, the Corso Gallio opened in 1666, and the historic churches and palaces tell centuries of history. Organized by the Municipality of Alvito together with the San Valerio Festival Committee and the Parish of San Simeone Profeta, the festival is an invitation to discover the authentic soul of the Comino Valley.
