Summer solstice celebrations in the City of Lovers, featuring gospel, brass bands, and iconic Italian voices
In the town of San Valentino Torio, located in the province of Salerno in the heart of the Agro Nocerino Sarnese, the summer solstice has long been synonymous with a highly anticipated event: the Music Festival. This local take on the European Music Festival animates thousands of cities across Europe every June 21st. For a few nights, the town changes its rhythm: music spills out of schools, rehearsal rooms, and associations to fill the streets, squares, and parks, in a format designed to make live music a simple, collective experience.
The event is promoted by the Pro Loco San Valentino Torio – Città degli Innamorati, the same association behind the winter patron saint celebrations and the Saint Valentine in Love festival, with the patronage and support of the Municipality of San Valentino Torio (Department of Entertainment and Culture) and the collaboration of local entities, including the local branch of the Banca di Credito Popolare. The main stage is set up on Viale Unità d'Italia, in the area adjacent to the Villa Comunale; in previous editions, events have also been held in Piazza Amendola, Palazzo Formosa, the Villa Comunale «G. Corazziere», and the streets of the historic center.
The hallmark of the San Valentino festival is the coexistence of diverse musical styles. Alongside the headline evening concerts, the program features local groups and young talent, having hosted over the years:
The 2026 edition peaked on the evening of June 21st, when the Viale Unità d'Italia stage lit up at 9:00 PM with the Non Solo Gospel ensemble directed by Simona Guida: fifteen voices and four musicians, a large, fully live lineup. This was followed by a concert by Amedeo Minghi, one of the most recognizable voices in Italian music, showcasing a repertoire built over decades of his career. Admission was free, as always, and the square was packed with visitors from well beyond the municipal borders—a testament to why the San Valentino Torio Music Festival has become a benchmark for the entire Agro region.
With just over ten thousand inhabitants between Salerno and Naples, San Valentino Torio is known throughout Campania as the City of Lovers. Here, the patron saint of lovers is venerated, and community life has always revolved around the Pro Loco, which expertly manages patronal feasts, food festivals, and cultural events. The Music Festival is the highlight that kicks off the summer, setting the stage for other seasonal initiatives ranging from open-air cinema to the town's young jazz festival.
It is a town festival in the best sense of the word: free, open-air, without barriers or age distinctions, and with an artistic quality that often surprises first-time visitors. Those visiting the province of Salerno in June can combine the concert evening with a walk through the historic center, a gastronomic stop to taste the products of the Agro Nocerino Sarnese—above all the San Marzano DOP tomato—and a trip to the coast or the ruins of Pompeii, both just a short distance away.
The 2026 edition opened on the evening of Sunday, June 21st, the day of the solstice, on Viale Unità d'Italia, in the area adjacent to the Villa Comunale. At 9:00 PM, the stage was taken by the Non Solo Gospel ensemble directed by Simona Guida: fifteen voices and four musicians, all strictly live, for a group that boasts five awards at the Italian Gospel Music Awards and three at the 2024 European Gospel Music Awards.
At 10:00 PM, it was time for the concert by Amedeo Minghi, one of the most beloved voices in Italian music, welcomed by a large audience from across the Agro Nocerino Sarnese. The festival continued with other musical events until June 23rd, following the established formula that alternates evening stages, school choirs, and brass bands throughout the town streets.
The event, promoted by the Pro Loco San Valentino Torio – Città degli Innamorati, took place with the patronage and support of the Municipality of San Valentino Torio (Department of Entertainment and Culture) and the collaboration of the local branch of the Banca di Credito Popolare. All concerts were free to attend.
