Three nights of free jazz in the gardens of Palazzo Formosa
The San Valentino Jazz Festival is the premier summer music event in San Valentino Torio, a town in the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese area of the Salerno province, in the heart of Campania. Established in 2025 by the municipal administration, the festival is hosted in the gardens of Palazzo Formosa, a noble residence built around the 16th century for the Formosa family, one of the town's most historic dynasties. With its wrought-iron balconies, arched windows, ornate stone portal, and frescoed halls, the building is one of the town's most beautiful landmarks—a heritage site that opens its doors to the public for three nights a year to serve as an open-air theater.
The festival's structure has remained consistent since its inception, and its strength lies in its simplicity. Each day is divided into two main parts:
Everything is free of charge: a deliberate choice by the administration to ensure the event combines artistic quality with total accessibility.
The 2026 edition brought three distinct musical projects to San Valentino Torio. On Friday, July 24, the Matteo Franza Reunion performed Napoli-Cuba solo andata, a work blending Neapolitan tradition with Caribbean rhythms, featuring special guest Giovanni Imparato. Saturday, July 25, featured the Mario Rosini Quartet, led by the renowned Apulian pianist and singer, one of the most recognizable voices in Italian jazz. The finale on Sunday, July 26, was headlined by the Stefano Di Battista Quartet with Morricone Stories, a project in which the Roman saxophonist reimagines the music of Ennio Morricone through a jazz lens.
The project is curated by musician Angela D'Ammora, who has served as artistic director since the first edition. She has built a lineup that balances major national names with educational opportunities. The initiative is promoted by the Municipality of San Valentino Torio, with Mayor Michele Strianese, Culture Councilor Raffaella Zuottolo, and Events Councilor Enzo Ferrante. The goal is to promote a holistic approach to culture that integrates performance, education, and local promotion.
The festival debuted from July 25 to 27, 2025, in the gardens of Palazzo Formosa. The three nights featured the gipsy jazz of the Cyranó Vatel Quartet with Daniele Scannapieco, the contemporary jazz of the Elio Coppola trio with trumpeter Flavio Boltro, and a closing performance by the Servillo-Girotto-Mangalavite trio. The high turnout, with thousands of attendees from across the region, convinced the organizers to make the festival a permanent fixture in the Campanian cultural calendar.
With just under 11,000 inhabitants, San Valentino Torio is located in the Sarno Valley, a short distance from Mount Vesuvius. It is an area with a strong agricultural tradition, famous for the cultivation of the San Marzano tomato. The town owes its name to the patron saint of lovers, an identity the community proudly embraces. Its location, halfway between Naples and Salerno and just a few kilometers from Pompeii and Sarno, makes it a convenient destination for travelers staying in the surrounding areas.
The evenings begin as the heat of the day fades and the gardens fill with locals. The audience is diverse: families, jazz enthusiasts from neighboring towns, and young people who stay for the midnight DJ set. The intimate scale of the venue creates a close connection between musicians and listeners, more like a club setting than a large summer stage. This balance of intimacy, free access, and high-caliber national talent defines the identity of the San Valentino Jazz Festival.
Following its 2025 debut, the San Valentino Jazz Festival returned from July 24 to 26, 2026, to the gardens of Palazzo Formosa, confirming the formula that led to its success: three free evening concerts, free afternoon masterclasses, and a danceable after-party. Musician Angela D'Ammora remained the artistic director, while the Municipality of San Valentino Torio handled the organizational management.
The lineup featured three distinct musical styles: the fusion of Naples and the Caribbean by the Matteo Franza Reunion, the vocal jazz of the Mario Rosini Quartet, and the reinterpretation of Ennio Morricone's repertoire by Stefano Di Battista. Every night, starting at 11:00 PM, the Augusto Electroswing Experience extended the festivities with a DJ set blending swing and electronic music.
Officials described the festival as "another step forward in a journey aimed at promoting high-profile cultural events," while Mayor Michele Strianese highlighted a project that "interprets a holistic concept of culture, capable of combining performance, education, and local promotion."
Every night from 11:00 PM, the Augusto Electroswing Experience DJ set with music and dancing.
Daily from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Palazzo Formosa, free admission: sessions dedicated to the history, language, and culture of jazz, led by professional artists and open to students, young musicians, and enthusiasts.
By car: Take the Sarno exit on the A30 Caserta–Salerno motorway, just a few kilometers from the center of San Valentino Torio; alternatively, take the Nocera–Pagani exit on the A3 Naples–Salerno motorway. By train: The nearest stations are Sarno and Nocera Inferiore (Naples–Salerno line), both a few kilometers away; from there, you can reach the town by bus or taxi. By plane: Naples-Capodichino Airport is approximately 40 km away, and Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi Airport is about 30 km away.
Masterclasses are held daily from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Palazzo Formosa. Evening concerts start at 9:00 PM in the palace gardens. The Augusto Electroswing Experience DJ set begins at 11:00 PM.
All concerts and afternoon masterclasses are free of charge. No reservations are required; however, seating is limited, so arriving early is recommended, especially for the most popular evenings.
The festival takes place entirely outdoors; a light jacket is useful for the later hours. San Valentino Torio has limited accommodation, but the area is well-served: Nocera Inferiore, Sarno, Pompeii, and the Salerno coast can all be reached in less than an hour by car.
