About San Silverio

Every June 20th, Scerni, in the province of Chieti, celebrates San Silverio, the Pope and martyr venerated as the town's co-patron alongside Saint Panfilo of Sulmona. The festival unites the local community's devotion with the evocative evening procession that carries the saint's statue from the church of San Panfilo to the hamlet of Colle Marrollo. Masses, prayer vigils, and social gatherings in the square mark one of the most heartfelt religious observances in the Abruzzo hinterland of the Vasto area.

A festival of the Vasto heart

The San Silverio Festival is one of the most deeply rooted religious events in Scerni, a town of about five thousand inhabitants perched at an altitude of 333 meters in the hilly hinterland of the Chieti province, in Abruzzo. San Silverio, a 6th-century Pope who died a martyr, is venerated by the people of Scerni as the town's co-patron alongside the primary patron, Saint Panfilo of Sulmona. The feast falls annually on June 20th, a fixed date in the liturgical calendar, symbolically marking the community's entry into the summer festival season.

The procession to Colle Marrollo

The most anticipated moment is the evening procession. The statue of the saint leaves the ancient church of San Panfilo in the historic center and is carried in a procession toward the hamlet of Colle Marrollo, one of the many districts that make up the Scerni territory. Accompanied by the faithful and their prayers, the procession reaches the hill where Mass is celebrated, followed by a prayer vigil that continues late into the evening. The following day, the statue returns to the sanctuary of Madonna della Strada and then to San Panfilo, closing the devotional cycle with further religious services.

Devotion and community

The festival is more than just a liturgical event; it is a reunion for the entire Scerni community and for emigrants who return to the village specifically for these days. The celebrations are surrounded by convivial moments, illuminations along the village streets, and, traditionally, a concert in the square that accompanies the evening after the services. It is the popular face of an observance that intertwines the sacred and the profane, as is the best tradition of Abruzzese patronal feasts.

Scerni and its heritage

The town guards a valuable religious heritage: the church of San Panfilo, with its scenic brick facade and double-flight staircase, houses a 15th-century wooden statue of the saint, while the church of Madonna della Strada preserves a 1774 Baroque organ. Scerni is also known for its gastronomic tradition, particularly ventricina, a typical sausage from the Vasto area. The San Silverio Festival is part of a busy summer calendar that includes, among others, the feast of Saint James and that of the Madonna della Strada.
