About San Sabino Feast

Every summer, Canosa di Puglia celebrates its Patronal Feast in honor of Saint Sabinus, the first Saint of Puglia, alongside Saint Alphonsus and Maria Santissima della Fonte. Between religious rites, processions, artistic illuminations, brass bands, food stalls, and major free concerts in Piazza Vittorio Veneto, the city in the BAT province experiences some of its most heartfelt days of the year. An event that blends centuries-old devotion with popular celebration in the heart of ancient Canusium.

The San Sabino Patronal Feast in Canosa di Puglia

The San Sabino Patronal Feast is the most anticipated civil and religious event of the summer in Canosa di Puglia, located in the heart of the Barletta-Andria-Trani (BAT) province in Puglia. Every year in August, the city pays tribute to its patron saintsโ€”Saint Sabinus, Saint Alphonsus, and Maria Santissima della Fonteโ€”with days of liturgical solemnity, processions, artistic illuminations, band concerts, and major public shows that draw citizens and visitors from across the Daunia and Terra di Bari regions.

Saint Sabinus, the first Saint of Puglia

Saint Sabinus, Bishop of Canosa, is venerated as the first Puglian Saint and a central figure in the city's religious history. Born in ancient Canusium, one of the most important Roman cities in Apulia, he is today the primary patron of the community. His liturgical feast falls on February 9th, but it is the civil feast in August that mobilizes the entire city. The cult is preserved in the evocative Cathedral Basilica of San Sabino, which also houses the famous Mausoleum of Bohemond of Hauteville, a jewel of medieval Puglian art.

Rites, procession, and popular celebration

The festivities intertwine the sacred and the popular. The program traditionally includes:

  • Solemn liturgical celebrations in the Cathedral and the procession with the statue of the Saint through the streets of the historic center;
  • Spectacular illuminations that light up the avenues and squares;
  • Performances by brass bands and traditional bandstands;
  • Major free evening concerts in Piazza Vittorio Veneto, the beating heart of the festival;
  • Food stalls featuring typical Puglian flavors and traditional firework displays to close the festivities.

A community-driven event

The festival is organized by the Municipal Administration together with the Patronal Feast Committee, with the support of local sponsors. The city center is closed to traffic to welcome the crowds, and the event represents one of the strongest identity-building moments for Canosa, capable of bringing together local families and the many emigrant Canosini who return for the occasion.

Canosa di Puglia and its surroundings

Situated on a hill overlooking the Ofanto valley, Canosa di Puglia is one of the oldest cities in Italy, rich in Daunian, Roman, and Paleochristian heritage. The San Sabino Feast is the ideal opportunity to discover its extraordinary archaeological wealth and the warm hospitality of the town, set within one of the youngest provinces in the Puglia region.
