The procession of August 16th in the highest Molise
Perched in the highest Molise, in the province of Isernia and a stone's throw from the border with Abruzzo, Sant'Angelo del Pesco is a small mountain village of a few hundred inhabitants. Here, as in many Apennine villages, devotion to Saint Roch is particularly strong: on August 16th, the community gathers around the saint with the traditional procession through the village streets.
Saint Roch, traditionally invoked as a protector against epidemics, is one of the most beloved figures in the popular religiosity of Southern Italy. In Sant'Angelo del Pesco, his festival, right in the middle of Ferragosto, is also an occasion for the village to come alive with the return of those born there who now live elsewhere. The procession and the festive moments renew an ancient bond between the community and its territory.
Immersed in the green of the Molise Apennines, bordering the Maiella National Park and Abruzzo, Sant'Angelo del Pesco offers the ideal setting to experience a genuine and intimate village festival. The Saint Roch festival is one of the events that mark the summer in this little-known and fascinating corner of Molise.
The Saint Roch festival returns on August 16, 2026, in Sant'Angelo del Pesco (IS). As tradition dictates, the day will be dedicated to devotion to the saint, with the procession of his effigy through the village streets and community festivities. The detailed religious and civil program is usually announced by the parish in the weeks leading up to the anniversary.
The detailed program will be released by the parish.
