The truffle celebration in the heart of the Abruzzo Majella
The Lama dei Peligni Truffle Festival is the premier summer gourmet event in this mountain village in the province of Chieti, perched at an altitude of about 670 meters on the eastern slopes of the Majella, in Abruzzo. For a few evenings in mid-August, the heart of the town, particularly the central Piazza Umberto I, comes alive with food stalls, tastings, music, and performances, drawing visitors from across the region and neighboring villages.
Lama dei Peligni is part of the national Truffle Cities network: its territory, spanning oak forests, rocky cliffs, and plateaus, is home to all nine edible species of Italian truffles. The prized black truffle (Tuber melanosporum) and the summer black truffle or 'scorzone' (Tuber aestivum) grow here in abundance, alongside specimens of the rarer prized white truffle. Truffle hunting has deep roots here, dating back to the sixties and seventies, and is now an integral part of the town's identity.
The festival offers two or three evenings where gastronomy takes center stage. The menu, curated by the organizers at Elite Tartufi, revolves around the summer black truffle featured in numerous courses, accompanied by a wine bar offering a selection of Abruzzo wines. The tastings are paired with a schedule of live music, dancing, and street performances that enliven the streets and squares of the historic center until late into the night.
Visiting the festival is the perfect opportunity to explore a village rich in history and nature. Lama dei Peligni is also known as the 'Town of the Abruzzo Chamois' due to the wildlife area dedicated to the Majella Apennine chamois, and it houses the 'Maurizio Locati' Naturalistic-Archaeological Museum with its adjoining botanical garden. Nestled within the Majella National Park, the town combines the festival's culinary offerings with a natural and cultural heritage of great value.
The 8th edition of the Lama dei Peligni Truffle Festival is scheduled from Sunday, August 16 to Tuesday, August 18, 2026, in the village's historic center, with the main hub of the event in Piazza Umberto I. The evenings are set to begin at 6:00 PM.
For the 2026 edition, the organizers at Elite Tartufi confirm the proven format: tasting menus featuring summer black truffle, an Elité Wine Bar with a selection of Abruzzo wines, and a schedule of music and performances accompanying the three days. The names of the artists and the full evening program details will be announced by the organizers closer to the event date.
