Devotion to the pilgrim saint in the heart of Irpinia, mid-August

In Sturno, a village of just over 2,600 inhabitants nestled at an altitude of 652 meters in the Ufita Valley, in the province of Avellino, the summer calendar has always had a highlight immediately following Ferragosto. August 16th is the day of San Rocco, the pilgrim saint from Montpellier invoked against epidemics, and the Sturno community celebrates him according to a long-standing custom that combines liturgy, a procession, and a village fair.
The recurrence is part of a traditional duo: August 15th marks the celebrations for the Assumption and the Madonna del Carmine, followed the next day by those in honor of San Rocco. These two days, as described by local Irpinia guides, represent the moment when the village reunites, with families returning from the cities of the North and abroad for their holidays.
San Rocco is among the most beloved figures of Southern Italian popular religiosity. A pilgrim, healer, and protector of the sick and travelers, he is depicted with a staff, a shell, a sore on his leg, and his inseparable dog. Throughout Campania, and particularly in inland Irpinia, dozens of municipalities dedicate festivals to him between August 15th and 18th. Sturno fits into this devotional geography with a village-scale celebration—more intimate than the major patronal feasts, but no less heartfelt.
The official patron saint of the municipality remains San Domenico di Guzmán, celebrated on August 8th, while San Michele Arcangelo, the town's protector, is celebrated on May 8th and September 29th. San Rocco thus falls in the middle of a Sturno August packed with religious and civil events.
The structure of the day follows the classic pattern of Irpinian religious festivals, with several recurring elements:
Everything takes place outdoors, between the historic center and the town's public spaces, with free admission.
For some years now, the Sturno religious festivities have been gathered under the summer program promoted by the municipal administration, called E-State Sturnese (formerly Restate Sturnese), which enlivens the town from June to September with sports, culture, music, shows, and popular traditions, under the patronage of the territorial project "I Borghi del Solco". The 2026 edition includes, among other initiatives, the Feast of the Patron Saint San Domenico, the San Rocco Festival, the feast of San Michele, the Sturno Sport Festival in mid-August, the Farmers' Festival, the "Soli Deo Gloria" organ festival in the church of San Michele Arcangelo, and the re-enactment of the "Tracciatura dei Solchi".
The municipality of Sturno, autonomous since 1809, is known locally as the "little Switzerland" of Irpinia due to its panoramic position and the fresh air of the plateau. Rebuilt after the 1980 earthquake, which also destroyed the historic 1688 church of San Michele Arcangelo, it preserves the Palazzo dei Baroni Grella, a 17th-century noble residence now used for cultural events, the "re la Chiazza" fountain, and the chapel of the Madonna della Neve overlooking the Ufita Valley. The town has a deep-rooted band and musical tradition, which is also reflected in the accompaniment of the processions.
Those arriving in mid-August will find a lively village, where the religious festival is also an occasion for reunions, family feasts, and the rediscovery of Irpinian cuisine: homemade pasta, grilled meats, cheeses from Alta Irpinia, and local wines, from Fiano to Greco di Tufo, produced just a few kilometers away.
The traditional date of the festival is August 16th, but the detailed program is generally released a few days beforehand through the channels of the Municipality of Sturno and the parish. It is therefore advisable to check the times of the solemn mass and the procession closer to the date.
In July 2026, the Municipality of Sturno presented the E-State Sturnese 2026 program, which accompanies the Irpinian town from June to September with sports, culture, music, shows, and popular traditions. Among the announced events are the Feast of the Patron Saint San Domenico, the San Rocco Festival, and the one dedicated to San Michele, alongside concerts, cultural meetings, and initiatives to promote the territory's identity.
The released calendar does not yet indicate the precise day of the San Rocco festival or the times of the celebrations. Local custom places the recurrence on August 16th, the liturgical day of the saint, the day after the celebrations of the Assumption and the Madonna del Carmine. The events page of the municipal website currently only lists the patronal feast of San Domenico on August 8th for the month of August.
The detailed program—solemn mass, procession time, and any evening musical events in the square—will be communicated by the organizers in the days immediately preceding the festival.
