The patronal feast of Giglio Campese, featuring dawn cannon fire, a solemn procession, and fireworks over the Tower
The San Rocco Festival is the annual summer highlight that brings Giglio Campese to lifeโa village overlooking the bay of the same name on Isola del Giglio, in the Tuscan Archipelago, Province of Grosseto. Celebrated on August 16th, the feast day of the patron saint, it is one of the most anticipated events of the Giglio summer, drawing residents, vacationers, and tourists to one of the island's most scenic bays.
The festival retains a popular, maritime spirit rooted in the devotion of the local community. The day kicks off at dawn with the characteristic cannon fire, signaling the start of the festivities to the entire island. In the afternoon, the beach and Piazza di Mezzo Franco become a playground for children, with games and entertainment organized by local performers.
The most solemn moment is the Holy Mass followed by a procession through the village streets, accompanied by a musical band. The procession concludes at the sea with the moving laying of a floral wreath in memory of those lost at sea and missing sailorsโa gesture that binds the festival to the maritime identity of Campese.
As evening falls, the festival shifts gears: the square fills up for live concerts by cover bands and dancing, while at midnight the sky lights up with a fireworks display illuminating the evocative Torre del Campese, the ancient Medici watchtower that dominates the bay and serves as the village's symbol. In recent years, the festivities have extended to August 17th, featuring children's entertainment, foam parties, a fried fish festival, and beach DJ sets.
The festival is organized by the Associazione San Rocco di Giglio Campese, which manages the program and involves the entire community each year. To facilitate participation for those staying in other parts of the island, a free night shuttle service is usually provided for return trips to Giglio Castello and Giglio Porto during the festival evenings. The San Rocco Festival is the ideal opportunity to experience the most authentic and communal side of Isola del Giglio in the heart of summer, far from the typical tourist routes.
The patronal feast of Giglio Campese will be held on August 16, 2026, with festivities extending to August 17 as in recent editions. The official event calendar of Isola del Giglio confirms the date of the patron saint, San Rocco.
Although the full schedule for the 2026 edition has not yet been released, the structure of the festival remains consistent: cannon fire at dawn, games and entertainment for children on the beach in the afternoon, Holy Mass and a procession accompanied by the band, the floral wreath-laying at sea, evening concerts in the square, and a midnight fireworks display at the Torre del Campese.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition, including times, cover band names, and entertainment, will be announced by the Associazione San Rocco di Giglio Campese in the weeks preceding the festival.
Based on recent editions, the festival is structured as follows:
The festivities take place in Giglio Campese, a village on Isola del Giglio (Province of Grosseto), spanning the beach, Piazza di Mezzo Franco, and the area around the Torre del Campese.
Isola del Giglio is accessible by ferry from Porto Santo Stefano (Monte Argentario), with frequent connections in summer. From Giglio Porto, Giglio Campese is about 8 km away and can be reached by car, public bus, or taxi.
During the festival evenings, a free night shuttle service is usually available for return trips from Giglio Campese to Giglio Castello and Giglio Porto.
August 16th, feast of the patron saint San Rocco; in recent editions, festivities continue on August 17th.
